CHAPTER 2 – THE GUARDIAN

The blinding brilliance radiating from the split oak swallowed Lyra whole. Driven by a force beyond her comprehension, she stepped through the threshold, leaving the cold, bleak realm of Amuhr behind.

She materialized in an ancient, untouched glade deep within the heart of Eldor. Towering ferns dripped with liquid silver, and floating embers of blue light danced through the canopy like captive stars. The air smelled of ozone, crushed pines, and ancient incantations. But Lyra barely registered the breathtaking beauty around her, for standing in the center of the glade was a figure that made her breath catch in her throat.

He emerged from the shadows with the lethal grace of an apex predator. He was towering and broad-shouldered, clad in armor crafted from petrified dark wood and glowing spirit-steel. Yet he was not entirely human. Beneath his wild, obsidian hair, two sweeping, ethereal crests resembling stag horns rose from his brow. His eyes burned with a fierce, luminescent gold, and along his sun-bronzed skin ran glowing, fluid runes of a spirit-beast.

He was Kael—the last Guardian of Eldor.

Lyra stumbled backward, her heels catching on a knot of glowing moss. "Who... what are you?"

Kael stopped ten paces away. His golden eyes locked onto hers, scanning every line of her face with an intensity that seemed to pierce her very soul. The stoic, ancient guard in his posture visibly crumbled, replaced by an overwhelming, raw emotion that had been buried beneath centuries of stone.

He slowly dropped his broadsword, its tip embedding deep into the mossy earth.

"Three hundred and twelve years," Kael whispered, his voice a deep, gravelly baritone that vibrated like a heavy cello string. "Three hundred and twelve years I have stood vigil in this silence, watching the world rot beyond the canopy."

Lyra shrank back, terrified, her fingers clutching the silver-pendant at her throat. "I don't understand... I'm just a village orphan! I don't belong in a place like this!"

Kael took a single, deliberate step forward, his golden eyes shining with an unshakeable, terrifying reverence.

"You are no simple village girl, Lyra," he said softly, reaching out a gauntleted hand toward her. "At last... you have come home."

Before Lyra could demand an explanation, the golden light of the glade was violently snuffed out. The temperature plummeted into an arctic freeze, turning her breath into plumes of ice. The smell of sulfur and rotting flesh filled the air.

From the dense, suffocating shadows at the edge of the clearing, a nightmare materialized. It was a Shadow Beast—a massive, quadrupedal horror woven from writhing black smoke, razor-sharp obsidian fangs, and glowing crimson eyes. It let out an ear-splitting shriek that shattered the surrounding crystal flora, its massive claws tearing up the soil as it pounced directly toward Lyra.
