CHAPTER 5 – THE HUNTERS

Three days passed within the sacred glade of the Heart Tree, though time inside Eldor moved like liquid silk, detached from the harsh ticking of the mortal world. Under Kael’s stern yet patient guidance, Lyra struggled to comprehend the dormant reservoir of arcana resting within her blood. She practiced focusing her mind, trying to summon even the simplest orb of light or shape the ambient mana that drifted around them like golden pollen. Yet her magic remained wild and unpredictable, flaring up like a sudden furnace when her emotions spiked, then retreating back into the icy depths of her soul the moment she tried to command it consciously.

On the afternoon of the fourth day, the ancient harmony of the forest was shattered without warning.

A sound like tearing parchment echoed through the canopy, followed by the deep, unnatural thunder of black-powder detonations. The perimeter wards—magical barriers of woven starlight and thorn-charm incantations that had shielded the inner glade for three centuries—shivered violently and fractured into glittering dust.

The air grew thick with the acrid stench of burning pine, sulfur, and dark iron. The bioluminescent ferns along the forest floor withered in seconds, turning to black slime as a wave of anti-magic corruption rolled through the trees.

"They have breached the outer boundary," Kael growled. He stood instantly, his broadsword unsheathing with a sharp metallic rasp that echoed through the grove. The golden spirit-runes along his arms flared brilliantly, and his stag-horn crests burned with radiant, golden flame. "Stay behind the roots of the Heart Tree, Lyra. Do not step out into the open, no matter what happens."

Through the rising smoke and burning foliage marched the Witch Hunters—a fanatical, ruthless order of mercenary inquisitors dedicated to the total eradication of wild arcana from the realm. Clad in spiked armor forged from cold dark-iron, they advanced in disciplined, terrifying formations. They carried heavy crossbows loaded with runic bolts, enchanted nets woven from silver wire, and dark-powder grenades designed to disrupt the flow of natural mana.

At the head of the invading legion rode Lord Varos.

He was a hulking, scar-faced warlord whose eyes burned with a cold, psychotic fervour. He wore a mantle crafted from the hide of a slain manticore, and his armor was etched with forbidden anti-magic sigils that absorbed the ambient light around him. But what caught Lyra’s eye—and made Kael’s jaw set in fierce, lethal determination—was the weapon resting in Varos’s right hand.

It was the God-Slayer Blade.

The weapon was an ancient, terrifying relic forged during the Dark Wars from obsidian ore pulled directly from the abyssal deeps. Its jagged edge dripped with a dark, corrosive aura that hissed whenever it touched the air. It was a blade crafted for a single purpose: to sever the immortal life-force of spirit-guardians and consume their divine arcana.

"Find the girl!" Varos roared, his gravelly voice amplified by a dark megaphone charm attached to his gorget. He pointed his jagged sword toward the alabaster trunk of the Heart Tree. "The Dark Sovereign demands her head! Slay the beast that guards her, and burn this cursed grove to the ground!"

"Over my cold ash, inquisitor!" Kael roared back.

With a battle cry that shook the surrounding cliffs, the Guardian leaped forward. He moved like a golden gale of destruction, his broadsword becoming a wheel of searing dragon-fire. He slammed into the front line of the Witch Hunters with terrifying force. Dark-iron shields shattered like brittle glass under his strikes; runic bolts exploded harmlessly against his spirit-steel armor. He spun, swept, and cleaved through the ranks of inquisitors, leaving a trail of broken weapons and blazing spirit-fire in his wake.

For a moment, it seemed the ancient Guardian would single-handedly turn back the entire legion. But Varos was no mindless brute; he was a veteran of a hundred dark campaigns.

"Deploy the null-chains!" Varos bellowed.

Four heavy infantrymen fired heavy harpoons anchored with thick, silver-plated chains directly into the ground surrounding Kael. As the chains struck the earth, they formed an oppressive, triangular anti-magic field that pinned the Guardian in place, suppressing his golden spirit-fire and binding his arms with burning cold iron.

Kael strained against the chains, his muscles bulging, his stag-horn crests flickering wildly as he fought to break the suppression field.

Varos seized the opportunity. Spurring his armored warhose forward, the warlord closed the distance in a heartbeat. With a cruel, victorious sneer, Varos raised the God-Slayer Blade high into the air and drove its jagged, black point deep into Kael’s left shoulder.

A sickening, wet crunch echoed through the glade.

Kael let out a choked gasp of unbearable agony. The dark, corrosive poison of the abyssal blade instantly flooded his spirit-veins. The golden runes on his bronzed skin turned pitch-black, sizzling as if burned by acid. The radiant light in his golden eyes died away, replaced by a dull, pain-wracked haze. The great Guardian collapsed to his knees in the mud, black blood pooling rapidly beneath his shattered armor.

"Kael!" Lyra screamed from behind the root barrier. Horror, cold and absolute, gripped her heart.

"A pathetic relic of a dead age," Varos sneered, twisting the jagged blade deeper into Kael’s wound before drawing it back. He raised the dripping sword above Kael’s exposed neck, preparing to deliver the final, decapitating blow. "Your Queen died a thousand years ago, beast. And now, you join her in the dust."

"No!" Lyra cried out.

She did not think. She did not recall the formal incantations Kael had tried to teach her, nor did she reach for an imagined wand or stave. The sight of Kael’s blood—the sight of the protector who had waited three hundred years for her, kneeling in the dirt about to be slaughtered—ignited something primal, ancient, and terrifying deep within the core of her soul.

The temperature in the grove dropped to absolute zero in a fraction of a second. The burning flames on the surrounding trees instantly froze into crystalline blue ice.

Lyra stepped out from behind the Heart Tree. Her silver eyes no longer looked human; they blazed with a blinding, incandescent starlight that cast no shadows. Her dark hair lifted into the air, floating as if submerged in deep water.

"Get... away... from him!" she commanded.

Her voice was not that of a peasant girl from Oakhaven. It resonated with the multi-tonal, divine majesty of Queen Aranel—a voice that carried the authority of the sky, the earth, and the stars.

She raised both hands toward the sky.

BOOM!

A catastrophic column of pure, unbridled celestial arcana erupted from her chest, shooting straight into the heavens and tearing the crimson clouds apart. A blinding shockwave of silver-gold energy exploded outward from her body in a expanding ring of raw power.

The ground beneath the glade shattered. Multi-ton boulders were plucked from the earth and levitated into the air like feathers. The silver null-chains holding Kael were instantly vaporized into fine dust. The Witch Hunters’ dark-iron armor crumpled like wet parchment under the immense pressure, sending Varos and his entire legion flying backward through the air like autumn leaves in a hurricane.

The power surged outward, expanding far beyond the glade. The massive, ancient trees of Eldor groaned and bent like saplings. The entire mountain range of Amuhr trembled to its very roots as the dormant magic of the ancient Queen awoke in full, terrifying fury, shaking the foundations of the world.
