CHAPTER 4 – THE FORGOTTEN QUEEN

Lyra remained on her knees in the shallow, luminous pool, her fingers digging into the cool submerged moss beneath the starlight water. The divine echo of the Heart Tree’s voice still vibrated through the marrow of her bones, leaving a lingering hum in the air that tasted of wild ozone and ancient honey. Her chest heaved as she fought to integrate the staggering torrent of visions—the soaring white towers of a celestial city, the terrifying roar of abyssal war-horns, and the unbearable chill of an obsidian blade buried in her heart.
Kael did not pull her up immediately. He remained kneeling in the water beside her, his posture rigid with an ancient, solemn reverence. The luminescent golden runes on his arms glowed dimly beneath his skin, pulsing in harmony with her own ragged breathing.
"What... what did it call me?" Lyra whispered, her voice cracking as she turned her silver eyes toward him. Tears cut pale tracks through the dirt on her cheeks. "Kael, I am an orphan from Oakhaven. I scrubbed floors for stale bread. I don't know how to cast a simple light spell, let alone wield a sword!"
"You were born an orphan in this age because the world required your light to be hidden in the mud," Kael said softly. His deep baritone was steady, a grounding anchor in the vast, overwhelming sea of her shock. He gently reached out, offering his gauntleted hand. "Stand, my Queen. The mud was merely your cocoon. The sky has always belonged to you."
Hesitantly, Lyra took his hand and allowed him to lift her from the water. As she stepped back onto the dry, glowing bank, she looked up at the colossal banyan tree. The alabaster bark continued to pulse with gold and silver light, its emerald leaves whispering an ancient lullaby that settled the wild panic raging in her mind.
"Tell me," Lyra demanded, her voice gathering a quiet, unexpected strength that surprised even herself—a tone that sounded less like a frightened peasant girl and more like the sovereign she had seen in the silver glass. "Tell me everything. No more riddles. No more fairy tales."
Kael bowed his head slightly, accepting her command. He gestured toward a smooth slab of white marble near the base of the tree. Once she sat, resting her hands on her lap, Kael turned to face the vast, glowing glade, his golden eyes darkening with the weight of centuries-old grief.
"One thousand years ago, this realm was not a barren wilderness of fear and mud," Kael began, his voice echoing off the white marble cliffs. "It was Aethelgard, the High Realm of Arcana, ruled from the throne of the Celestial City by Queen Aranel—the absolute sovereign of wild light and the mother of Eldor. Under her reign, the four free races—Elf, Dwarf, Beastfolk, and Mage—lived in a golden age of peace. The magic of the world flowed freely, nurtured by the grand spire of the Heart Tree."
He paused, his jaw tightening as he looked down at his own gauntlets. "But beneath the foundation of the world, in the abyssal trenches of the deep earth, a dark entity stirred: King Morgath, the Sovereign of Shadow. Driven by a twisted obsession to consume the world's Mana, Morgath unleashed the Abyssal Legions—millions of shadow beasts, dark sorcerers, and corrupted dragons. They breached the surface, burning cities to ash and turning the sky into a blanket of eternal night."
"The Great War," Lyra murmured, the memory flashing through her mind like a fresh scar. "I saw the white walls crumbling."
"You saw the fall of your kingdom," Kael corrected gently. "When all hope seemed lost, Queen Aranel knew that Morgath could not be slain by mortal steel or ordinary spells. His soul was anchored to the abyssal deeps. So, she executed a forbidden, cosmic ritual. She gathered the entirety of her divine Mana and shattered her own immortal soul into fragmented sparks, weaving a cosmic seal—a Great Lock—that dragged Morgath and his legions back into the abyssal vault, binding them beneath the earth."
Lyra looked down at her hands, her silver eyes widening as the final piece of the puzzle clicked into place. "And those soul fragments..."
"For a thousand years, those sparks wandered through the tapestry of rebirth," Kael explained, his voice thick with emotion. "Reincarnating across generations, waiting for the alignment of the stars and the blooming of the Blood Moon. You, Lyra, are the final, complete vessel. Within your chest rests the re-assembled soul of Queen Aranel. The Heart Tree recognized you because its sap was distilled from your own blood a millennium ago."
A cold wind suddenly swept through the glade, causing the emerald leaves of the Heart Tree to rustle nervously. The bioluminescent ferns along the edge of the clearing shrank back into the earth, their pale blue light dimming to a dull flickers.
Kael’s golden eyes snapped toward the eastern horizon. His ears twitched beneath his obsidian hair, his stance instantly shifting into that of a lethal predator.
"The seal is breaking," Kael growled, his hand falling to the hilt of his broadsword. "The moment your soul awakened beneath the Blood Moon, the Great Lock weakened. Morgath knows you have returned. If your full memories and ancient arcana awaken completely, you will have the power to restore the seal forever and cleanse the world of his dark rot. But if you are slain before your magic matures..."
He turned back to look at her, his face grim. "...the Dark King will break his chains, and an age of absolute, eternal darkness will consume every living soul in Amuhr."
Miles away from the sanctuary of Eldor, far beyond the jagged mountain peaks and deep within the subterranean bowels of the earth, lay the Obsidian Citadel.
Suspended over an endless chasm of bubbling, toxic hellfire by massive, rusting chains forged from dark iron, a giant figure hung in the dark. For a thousand years, he had remained motionless, a petrified monument of nightmare armor and dormant malice.
Suddenly, a violent tremor shook the citadel.
The massive chains groaned under a sudden, terrifying strain. Deep within the dark helmet of the suspended giant, two eyes—flaming spheres of absolute, abyssal crimson—snapped open.
A low, guttural laugh erupted from the depths of the armored chest, a sound so vile and powerful that it caused the ground across the entire province of Amuhr to quake, sending landslides tumbling down the mountain peaks.

The Dark King raised his massive, gauntleted head, his fiery gaze piercing through miles of rock and magic, locking onto the faint, silver beacon blooming deep within the forbidden forest.
"Aranel..." the Dark King rasped, his voice sounding like grinding iron plates. "You have returned to my realm, little Queen. And this time... there will be no seal to save you."
