CHAPTER 9 – THE FALL OF DARKNESS

Mounted upon the colossal, shimmering frame of Ignis-Vael, Lyra descended from the frozen heights of Mount Dragontooth like a falling star of pure, sapphire fire.

Below, the surface of Amuhr and the sacred glades of Eldor had become a catastrophic maelstrom of blood, ash, and screaming metal. The sky above was a torn tapestry of bruised crimson and pitch-black abyssal smoke. The ground split open in jagged trenches, spewing forth unending tides of winged shadow beasts, grotesque fiends, and dark-iron war machines. The allied forces of Aeridor—Elven archers, Dwarven vanguard phalanxes, Beastfolk warriors, and surviving Mages—fought desperately alongside Kael, who stood at the vanguard, his spirit-blade weaving a lethal wheel of golden dragon-fire through the dark horde.

"Ignis-Vael!" Lyra commanded, her voice cutting through the roar of battle with divine resonance. "Cleanse the threshold!"

The Last Dragon unleashed a deafening, sky-shattering roar. From his massive, scaled jaws erupted a soaring torrent of superheated, sapphire fire that swept across the central valley. The dark legions were instantly incinerated, their dark armor melting into liquid slag and their shadowy forms dissolving into harmless white ash before they could even scream.

Beside the divine dragon, Kael surged forward, his golden runes burning with renewed vigor as he carved a bloody path through the remaining dark vanguard toward the heart of the battlefield—where the giant Hellgate pulsed over the shattered roots of the Heart Tree.

There, floating above the dying, weeping branches of the alabaster banyan, stood the Sovereign of Shadow himself: Dark King Morgath.

He was a terrifying, towering titan clad in jagged armor forged from petrified nightmare essence and abyssal iron. His very presence distorted the air around him, draining the light and warmth from the soil. A mantle of dark flame rippled behind his shoulders, and in his right hand he held a gargantuan, two-handed broadsword dripping with dark, corrosive malice.

Ignis-Vael landed with a earth-shaking impact at the edge of the clearing, his wings sweeping aside a dozen shadow beasts as Lyra stepped down from his scaled neck. Kael landed beside her in a low crouch, his blade drawn, his golden eyes locked onto his former master.

"So," Morgath rasped, his voice echoing like grinding tectonic plates through the hollow skulls of everyone on the battlefield. "The little Queen returns on the back of my father's old pet. You bring dragon-fire and spirit-steel to a realm that belongs to the dark!"

"Your dark rot ends today, Morgath!" Lyra declared, drawing her silver broadsword. Her dark hair floated on invisible currents, and her silver eyes blazed with the light of a thousand burning suns. "I will restore the Great Lock and seal you beneath the stone forever!"

The Dark King let out a low, booming cackle—a sound so full of cruel, tragic mockery that the ground beneath their boots shuddered.

"Restore the lock?" Morgath sneered, stepping down from the air onto the corrupted moss. "You still speak with the naive arrogance of the Celestial City, Aranel. You look upon me and see only a monster of the abyss. You forgot why the first throne of Amuhr was built, and whose blood flows in your very veins."

Morgath raised his gauntleted left hand and slowly reached up to unlock the dark, horned visor of his nightmare helmet. With a heavy metallic hiss, the faceplate detached and dissolved into black mist.

Lyra’s breath caught violently in her throat. Kael’s broadsword faltered for a fraction of a second.

Beneath the shadow armor lay no hideous demon or faceless horror. It was the face of an ancient, noble King—with sharp, regal features, dark hair silvered at the temples, and piercing eyes that held the unmistakable, shimmering hue of starlight, now corrupted by veins of crimson fire. It was a face carved into the grand royal portraits preserved in the deepest chambers of her memories.

"Father..." Lyra whispered, the ancient word rising involuntarily from the deepest depths of her reincarnated soul.

"Aye," Morgath said softly, a twisted, mournful smile touching his pale lips. "Before I was the nightmare under the earth, I was King Morgath of Amuhr. I was your father, child. I built the white towers you died to protect. When the first dark blight threatened our kingdom a thousand years ago, I descended into the abyssal deeps alone to drink the dark arcana, sacrificing my own soul so that our bloodline might rule forever. You called it madness. I called it love."

"No..." Lyra gasped, taking a step backward as her chest throbbed with a wave of ancient, suffocating grief. "No... you surrendered to the shadow! You destroyed everything we built!"

"And now, you face the ultimate tragedy of your divine destiny!" Morgath roared, his regal face twisting into a demonic scowl.

Before Kael or Ignis-Vael could react, Morgath slammed his gauntlet against his chest armor. A jagged, writhing chain of pure, black abyssal lightning erupted from his heart, shooting across the clearing faster than a striking viper and embedding itself directly into Kael’s chest!

Kael let out a choked, agonizing shriek as the dark tether wrapped around his core. The golden spirit-runes on his skin turned pitch-black, and his stag-horn crests shattered into sparks. He dropped his broadsword and fell to his knees in the mud, convulsing violently as the dark chain anchored his spirit directly to the Dark King's soul.

"Kael!" Lyra screamed, rushing forward, but the dark energy repelled her with a violent shockwave.

"Our life-forces are now fused as one, Aranel!" Morgath laughed maniacally, his crimson eyes blazing with absolute triumph. "His heart beats with mine! His spirit draws breath from my dark well! If you strike me down to save your precious world, the feedback will instantly pulverize your beloved Guardian’s soul into dust! But if you stay your hand to save him... my legions will burn every village, every city, and every living soul in this realm to ash!"

Morgath spread his arms wide, opening his dark defense completely, presenting his chest to her blade.

"Choose, Queen of Light!" Morgath boomed, his voice echoing across the dying battlefield like the tolling of a doom-bell. "Save your lover... or save the world!"

Lyra stood frozen in the center of the burning glade. She looked at Kael, whose body was wracked with agony, his golden eyes looking up at her through a haze of pain, silently pleading with her to strike and fulfill her duty. She looked at the giant Hellgate spewing darkness over the horizon, at the thousands of innocent citizens fighting for their lives in the valley below.

The impossible weight of the universe pressed down upon her shoulders. Save the man who had waited three hundred years for her, or save the realm she was reborn to protect.

A profound, absolute stillness washed over Lyra’s mind. The screaming died away; the sound of the wind ceased. In the quiet space of her soul, she saw the tapestry of fate stretching out before her—and saw the single, narrow thread that no dark prophecy had foreseen.

She looked at Kael one last time, offering him a soft, beautiful, heartbroken smile that held a thousand years of unspoken love.

"I choose both," Lyra whispered softly.

May you like

Before Morgath or Kael could comprehend her words, Lyra reversed her grip on her sacred silver broadsword. Raising the point toward her own chest, she did not hesitate.

With a single, decisive thrust, she drove the divine blade straight into her own heart.
