CHAPTER 6 – THE HIDDEN KINGDOM

The blinding supernova of celestial arcana left a mile-wide crater of scorched, glassy earth where Lord Varos and his Witch Hunter legion had stood. Boulders floated motionless in mid-air, caught in the residual gravitational field of Lyra’s outburst, before crashing back down to the earth in a deafening cascade of rock and dust.
Exhausted by the violent eruption of her awakening magic, Lyra collapsed to her knees, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her silver eyes faded back to their human hue, and her vision swam with dark spots. But there was no time to rest.
Beside her, Kael lay unmoving in the blackened mud. The corrosive poison of the God-Slayer Blade was spreading rapidly through his spirit-veins, blackening his skin and turning his breath into ragged, shallow gasps.
"Kael..." Lyra choked out, crawling toward him and pressing her hands against his cold, steel-clad chest. She tried to channel the warm, glowing light that had just shattered an army, but her magic remained locked away, stubborn and cold beneath her skin. "Stay with me... please!"
"The roots..." Kael rasped, his voice barely a whisper above the groaning of the forest. He reached up with a trembling, gauntleted hand, pointing toward the massive, arching base of the Heart Tree. "Beneath the central taproot... the threshold to the deeps... Before Varos’s vanguard returns..."
Driven by desperation, Lyra dragged the towering Guardian across the glowing moss. Beneath the primary root arch of the alabaster tree lay a heavy, circular stone portal embedded in the earth, carved with ancient runes of passage. As Lyra touched the central sigil, her lingering arcana reacted with the stone. The portal groaned, grinding open to reveal a steep, winding spiral staircase descending into the luminous depths of the subterranean world.
With the last of her strength, Lyra pulled Kael through the threshold, and the stone slab sealed shut above them, shutting out the surface world and the stench of burning pine.
They descended for hours through tunnels lined with glowing crystal veins and ancient dwarven stonework. As they ventured deeper, the suffocating chill of the surface gave way to a warm, humid breeze that carried the scent of subterranean blooms, forge-smoke, and ozone.
Finally, the narrow stairs opened onto a grand stone overlook, and Lyra froze in absolute awe.
Spread out beneath a vast, cavernous vault that stretched as far as the eye could see lay Aeridor—the legendary Hidden Kingdom.
Lit by giant, luminescent quartz crystals embedded in the cavern roof, the subterranean metropolis was a marvel of ancient architecture. Soaring white marble spires built by Elven architects brushed against the cavern ceiling, interconnected by delicate stone bridges. Massive, iron-forged citadels carved directly into the basalt cliffs housed the Dwarven halls, while sprawling terraced gardens and tribal pavilions belonged to the Beastfolk and Mage enclaves. A subterranean sea fed by glowing waterfalls wrapped around the city like a silver moat.
Here, the four free races had survived in secrecy for a thousand years, hidden from the dark rot of the surface.
"Halt! Who approaches the lower gates?" a booming voice echoed across the stone ledge.
A dozen elite guards materialized from the shadows, their weapons drawn. There were silver-armored Elven archers with bows drawn tight, broad-chested Dwarven vanguard warriors wielding glowing warhammers, and fiercely agile Beastfolk scouts clad in leather and iron.
"Stand down..." Kael groaned, pushing himself up against the stone wall, his face pale beneath his dark hair. He raised his left hand, displaying the ancient seal ring of the Guardian. "I bring... the Sovereign."
The guards gasped, their weapons lowering in shock as their eyes fell upon Lyra. Within minutes, news of their arrival spread through the underground city like wildfire, and an emergency session of the Grand Council of Aeridor was summoned inside the High Citadel.
The Council Chamber was a towering, circular hall carved from black obsidian. At the center sat a long crescent table where the leaders of the four free races gathered, their faces tense under the pale light of crystal braziers. Thousands of citizens crowded the upper galleries, their whispered rumors echoing off the stone walls.
Kael was taken to the side of the chamber, where two Mage healers frantically channeled green restoration light into his shoulder to slow the poison of the God-Slayer Blade. Lyra stood alone in the center of the floor, feeling small and exposed under the piercing gazes of the realm’s most powerful figures.
"This is madness!" Lord Elion, the High Representative of the Elves, declared, slamming his slender, ringed hand onto the table. His sharp features were pale with anger. "Look at her! She is a mortal girl who cannot even control her own breathing! For a thousand years, our wards have kept Aeridor invisible to the abyssal deeps. Bringing her here is an invitation to annihilation!"
"She unleashed a wave of raw celestial arcana that shook the mountain roots, Elion!" countered Chieftain Oakhaven, a towering, lion-featured Beastfolk warrior whose voice rumbled like thunder. "Our ancestral oaths bind us to Queen Aranel! The soul of the Queen has returned. We must place the crown upon her head and march our legions to the surface!"
"And march into a meat grinder?" interjected High Thane Torin of the Dwarves, his thick beard braided with gold coins. "The Dark King’s legions outnumber us ten to one! If we stay hidden beneath the stone, we survive. If we crown this girl, we trigger a war that will wipe out the last free races from the pages of history!"
"She is not a queen—she is a target!" a voice shouted from the Mage delegation. "Hand her over to the inquisitors! Or sacrifice her soul to reinforce the ancient seals before the Dark King wakes completely!"
The chamber erupted into a chaotic storm of shouting. Arguments turned into threats, and handguards were gripped as centuries of tension between the races flared to the surface.
Lyra watched in silence, her chest aching. She saw the fear behind their arrogance, the desperation behind their anger. They were a people who had spent a thousand years cowering in the dark, and her arrival had shattered the illusion of their safety.
Suddenly, a cold, unnatural draft swept through the warm, sealed air of the Council Chamber.
The glowing quartz crystals embedded in the vaulted ceiling flickered, their pale light dimming to a sickly, jaundiced yellow. The temperature plummeted instantly, and the crystal braziers along the walls flickered and died, plunging the vast hall into twilight.
At the edge of the high council table, a shadowy figure in a heavy velvet cloak stepped forward from the shadows of the Mage delegation. He slowly pulled back his hood, revealing a gaunt, pale face etched with black, writhing veins—the unmistakable mark of abyssal corruption.

A cold, mocking smile spread across the traitor's lips as he raised an iron talisman burning with crimson fire.
"You argue over crowns and survival, fools," the traitor whispered, his voice echoing with terrifying, multi-tonal malice. "While the gates of your sanctuary are already open."
