Chapter 1 - THE YELLOW HAT

Lily would not look at me.

That frightened me before I even saw her hair.

She stood in Vanessa’s dressing room with both hands gripping the brim of a yellow round-brimmed hat she hated wearing.

“Sweetheart?”

Her chin trembled.

Vanessa sat near the beauty lights, scrolling through her phone as though nothing unusual had happened.

Chloe was curled on the window seat with a coloring book.

Seven years old.

Silent.

Watching.

“Lily?”

My daughter slowly lifted the hat.

My body stopped understanding the room.

Her hair had been long that morning.

A thick chestnut braid reached between her shoulder blades.

Now jagged pieces stuck out around her head.

One side barely covered her ear.

Another section reached her jaw.

Above the left ear, dried blood marked a small cut.

I dropped beside her.

“Oh, baby.”

Lily squeezed the hat until the brim folded.

“Aunt Vanessa said my hair is too pretty…”

She struggled to breathe between sobs.

“…and that it’s just not fair to Chloe.”

I turned her head carefully.

“Did the scissors cut your skin?”

Lily nodded.

“Once.”

“Who was holding them?”

Her eyes moved toward Vanessa.

I followed them.

Beside the beauty chair sat a clear plastic bag.

Inside it was Lily’s braid.

Not loose hair.

The whole braid.

Still tied at the end with the blue elastic I had used that morning.

Something in me became very quiet.

I stood holding the bag.

Vanessa finally looked up.

Her smile lasted less than a second.

Then she sighed.

“She got into the scissors. Kids do stupid things.”

“My five-year-old braided her own hair, cut it at the scalp, put it in a bag, and cut behind her own ear?”

“Rachel, calm down.”

Chloe lowered her coloring book.

I should have remembered she was there.

I should have remembered Lily was there.

Instead I crossed the room.

Vanessa stood.

I slapped her.

Hard.

She lost her balance in her heels and went down beside the beauty table.

“Mom!” Chloe screamed.

That should have stopped me.

It didn’t.

Vanessa reached toward me.

I pushed her flat, caught her shoulder beneath my forearm, and saw electric clippers lying beside the ring light.

The thought arrived fully formed.

Make her feel it.

I grabbed them.

Vanessa twisted.

“Rachel, don’t you dare—”

I ran the clippers across the side of her head.

One line.

Then another.

Dark hair fell onto the floor.

Chloe screamed again.

Lily began crying louder.

Only then did I hear myself breathing.

I stopped.

The clippers remained buzzing in my hand.

Vanessa touched the bald strip above her temple.

“You psychopath!”

I looked at Lily.

She was staring at me.

Not relieved.

Afraid.

The same fear I had wanted to punish Vanessa for creating.

I turned off the clippers.

“My five-year-old would never cut her own hair.”

My voice sounded strange.

Controlled.

Too controlled.

Vanessa pushed herself upright.

“You’re going to jail.”

Maybe.

I had assaulted her.

Nothing about Lily’s haircut gave me legal permission to shave Vanessa’s head.

The realization arrived too late to undo anything.

I crouched beside Lily.

“I’m sorry you saw that.”

She pointed toward the table.

“Mommy.”

“What?”

“The movie.”

Vanessa moved.

Fast.

Toward her tablet.

I reached it first.

The screen showed a saved livestream.

Duration:

2:14.

Yellow hat nowhere in sight.

Vanessa standing behind her.

Scissors open.

My stomach dropped.

I pressed play.

Vanessa lunged.

“Give me that!”

I stepped backward and held the tablet against my chest.

Onscreen, Lily sat in the beauty chair.

Her long braid remained intact.

A woman’s voice—Vanessa’s—said:

“Hold still. People are watching.”

Lily whispered:

“I want my mommy.”

Vanessa’s face in the room went white.

Then a second voice came from the tablet.

Not Lily.

Not Vanessa.

A man.

“Make sure the before shot shows the braid. We need proof it was still long today.”

I looked up.

“Proof for what?”

May you like

Vanessa stopped moving.

And Chloe began to cry.
