Chapter 26 - THE FIRST CUT SHE GAVE HERSELF

At thirty, Lily came to my house with hair down to her shoulders.
“Mom.”
“What?”
“Watch.”
She took kitchen scissors from the drawer.
My entire body reacted.
She saw it.
“Seriously?”
“I’m fine.”
“You’re pale.”
“I’m sixty.”
“You’re fifty-four.”
“Emotionally sixty.”
She laughed.
Then held a small front strand.
“I want bangs.”
“Please go to a salon.”
“No.”
“You are an adult.”
“Correct.”
She cut.
Too short.
We stared.
Then both started laughing.
“Terrible,” I said.
“Awful.”
“No one can know.”
“I’m telling Chloe.”
“Traitor.”
The scissors went back in the drawer.
Nothing bad happened.
