Chapter 19 - THE COUSINS

Lily and Chloe saw each other again after two years.

Neutral park.

Daniel present.

Me present.

No Vanessa.

Chloe was nine.

Lily seven.

They stood five feet apart.

Awkward.

Chloe spoke first.

“I’m sorry Mom cut your hair.”

“You didn’t.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you sorry?”

Chloe shrugged.

“Because I was there.”

Lily thought.

“You told her stop.”

Chloe nodded.

They walked to the swings.

That was all.

No speeches.

No family-photo reconciliation.

Their relationship rebuilt in fragments.

Birthday cards.

Park visits.

Sleepover much later.

Never monetized.

No photographs online unless both families agreed.

At twelve and fourteen, they laughed about the old channel.

Chloe said:

“I hated saying ‘Hey, sparkle squad.’”

Lily nearly fell off the couch laughing.

Pain had finally become uncool enough to mock.
