Chapter 26 - OLIVIA SAYS GRANDMATwo years after the slap, Olivia saw Sarah at a supervised family session.

She was four.
She remembered Sarah vaguely.
Not the full event.
Children remember bodies before stories.
Olivia stayed beside me at first.
Sarah sat across the room.
No dramatic crying.
No rushing forward.
Good.
After twenty minutes, Olivia pointed.
“Grandma?”
Sarah swallowed.
“Yes.”
Olivia looked at me.
I nodded.
Not:
Go hug her.
Only confirmation.
Sarah brought a stuffed bear.
She placed it on the table rather than handing it directly to Olivia.
“That's for you if you want it.”
Olivia inspected it.
Then:
“I have Bear.”
She held up her old teddy.
Sarah’s eyes filled.
“I remember.”
Olivia did not.
Maybe that was mercy.
Tyler sat beside Michael.
He was nine.
Old enough to understand why everyone was careful.
Sarah looked at him.
“Hi, sweetheart.”
Tyler said:
“Hi.”
No hug.
May you like
She accepted it.
That was new.
