Chapter 7 - SARAH’S FAVORITESarah had always preferred Tyler.

I told myself it was because he was older.
First grandchild.
More verbal.
Easier to take places.
When Olivia was born, Sarah brought Tyler a “big brother gift” more expensive than anything she brought the baby.
Normal enough.
At Olivia’s first Christmas:
Tyler received a motorized train set.
Olivia got pajamas.
At Easter:
Tyler’s basket contained toys, candy, and twenty dollars.
Olivia’s contained socks and a board book.
I said:
“They don’t have to cost the same, but they should feel equally considered.”
Sarah replied:
“She’s a baby.”
Then came the comments.
“Tyler is a Carter through and through.”
“Look at those Carter eyes.”
“He’ll keep the name going.”
Once, while holding Olivia:
“She’ll belong to somebody else’s family one day.”
I corrected her.
Michael rolled his eyes.
“She’s from another generation.”
May you like
Generations do not slap toddlers.
People do.
