Chapter 4 - TYLER’S HOT DOGAt urgent care, Olivia sat on my lap and refused to release her bear.

The physician, Dr. Lauren Kim, examined her carefully.
No nasal fracture.
Minor soft-tissue injury.
Small abrasion inside one nostril.
Mild swelling along the cheek.
No signs of concussion.
That was the good news.
The harder part was the story.
“What happened?”
I told her.
Then Tyler interrupted.
“It was my fault.”
I turned.
“No.”
“Yes.”
He looked at the floor.
“I told Olivia she could have a bite.”
The room became still.
“What?”
“I didn’t want the whole hot dog.”
He swallowed.
“I put a piece on my plate edge for her.”
Sarah had told Olivia no.
Tyler said yes.
Olivia reached.
Sarah slapped her.
Not because Olivia stole from him.
Because Olivia disobeyed Sarah.
Tyler started crying.
“I shouldn’t have given it to her.”
I left Olivia with the nurse for ten seconds and knelt in front of him.
“You offering your sister food did not make Grandma hit her.”
“But if I didn’t—”
“No.”
I touched his knee.
“You are not responsible for what an adult does with their hands.”
He stared at me.
“Are you?”
That question cut.
“Am I what?”
“Responsible because you hit Grandma?”
I breathed.
“Yes.”
He looked surprised.
“I am responsible for slapping Grandma.”
“Even because she hit Olivia?”
“Yes.”
“Then why isn’t it my fault?”
Because children are terrifyingly logical.
I answered slowly.
“Because giving someone food is not hurting them. Grandma chose to slap Olivia. I chose to slap Grandma. Those choices belong to us.”
He thought.
Then nodded.

Lesson accepted.
I wished adults learned that quickly.
