Chapter 20 - THE COMPANY WITHOUT ME EVERY DAY

I stepped down as chief executive chairman at thirty-eight.

Not because of scandal.

Because I had finally learned that a company surviving my absence was not betrayal.

I remained board chair.

Peter Vale returned after two years in a nonexecutive governance role following an external review of his failures.

Some board members objected.

I supported him.

He had objected to Victoria’s transfers.

Failed to stop them.

Cooperated.

Accepted accountability.

Institutions improve by distinguishing negligence from malice.

Sophia was ten.

She cared only that I made soccer games.

I missed one.

Flight delay.

She cried.

I did not charter a plane to prove love.

I apologized.

Then came to the next.

Reliability is mostly boring.
