Chapter 5 - ELENA’S LAST NIGHT

Elena died on February 11.

I had been in Singapore.

Nine-hour time difference.

At 8:14 p.m. Virginia time, she called me.

I missed it.

I was in a board dinner.

She left no voicemail.

At 8:27, she texted:

Call me when you can. It’s about your mother and the trust.

I saw the text at 9:03.

Called.

No answer.

At 9:19, Victoria called me.

Crying.

“Elena fell.”

By then, paramedics were supposedly already there.

The original emergency call was timestamped 9:14.

Elena was pronounced dead at the hospital at 10:02.

Cause:

Blunt-force head trauma after stair fall.

Toxicology:

Therapeutic zolpidem level.

Sleeping medication.

Elena had an active prescription, used rarely.

The medical examiner found no evidence of overdose.

Original conclusion:

Accident.

Contributing factor:

Sedative use possibly impairing balance.

I accepted it.

Why?

Because grief wants a sentence.

Accident.

Freak fall.

Nothing anyone could do.

Sophia was in the house.

Victoria said she had been asleep upstairs.

A child therapist later advised against repeatedly asking whether Sophia saw anything.

Reasonable.

Then Victoria controlled every therapeutic appointment.

The reopened investigation examined the scene.

The stone service staircase was narrow.

Elena fell from near the top landing.

There was a bruise on her left upper arm documented in autopsy photographs.

Original investigator attributed it to impact.

A new forensic pathologist said:

“Could be impact. Could be grip. Not distinguishable with certainty.”

No miracle evidence.

Then the sedative.

Prescription bottle recovered from Elena’s bathroom.

Twenty-three tablets remaining.

Pharmacy count suggested twenty-four should remain if she used medication as prescribed.

One missing.

Consistent with blood level.

Nothing suspicious.

Until Peter Vale checked estate access logs.

At 7:41 that evening, Victoria entered Elena’s private office.

At 7:52, Elena entered.

At 8:03, Victoria left.

At 8:07, Elena accessed the family trust portal.

At 8:12, Elena printed forty-seven pages.

At 8:16, stairwell camera went offline.

8:29, Elena’s phone moved toward service wing.

Then stopped recording motion at 8:34.

Emergency call:

9:14.

Forty minutes.

My mother said she found Elena “minutes before calling.”

Was that true?

Her phone location showed Victoria in the east garden between 8:35 and 8:59.

Then near the service wing.

Could she simply not know Elena had fallen?

Possibly.

Then Sophia’s statement.

Grandma push Mommy.

Still allegation.

Not proof.

Ortiz asked:

“What was Elena investigating?”

I looked at her last text.

The trust.

North Coast began reviewing.

Elena had downloaded a set of files titled:

Sterling Next Generation Reserve.

Crown Hospitality Advances.

Estate Stewardship Exceptions.
