Chapter 23 - ELENA’S FOUNDATION

There was no Elena Sterling Memorial Empire.

I refused.

Elena hated gala philanthropy.

She believed wealthy families often spent too much money celebrating themselves giving money away.

Her words.

So we created something small through an existing legal-aid nonprofit:

A restricted fund for caregivers and spouses facing family financial coercion.

No portraits.

No ballroom.

No annual dinner.

The fund paid attorneys, forensic accountants, and emergency childcare.

Sophia learned about it at nineteen.

“Why didn’t you name it for Mom?”

“She would haunt me.”

Sophia laughed.

That was how Elena returned to our family eventually.

Not as the woman on the stairs.

As the woman who hated ceremonial checks.

The woman who sang terribly.

The woman who overwatered plants.

The woman who told me I used emergencies to avoid ordinary life.

Sofia? Sophia.

By twenty, Sophia remembered her mother more through stories than direct memory.

That hurt.

It was also normal.

Memory changes.

We did not force preservation into performance.
