Chapter 22 - WHEN VICTORIA CAME HOME

Victoria completed custody in her eighties.

Supervised release.

No fiduciary authority.

No Sterling board.

No direct contact with Sophia without Sophia’s agreement.

Sophia was sixteen.

She said no.

At eighteen:

Still no.

At twenty-one:

“One meeting.”

Neutral location.

Therapist available.

I did not attend.

Sophia later told me.

Victoria had shrunk physically.

Pearls still.

Of course.

Sophia asked:

“Why did you make me eat on the floor?”

Victoria answered:

“Because I needed people to believe you were disturbed.”

“Why?”

“To control the trust.”

“Why tell Dad I was sick?”

“Because he would come home otherwise.”

That hurt.

Sophia asked:

“Did you want Mom dead?”

“No.”

“Did you push her?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She called me a thief.”

“Were you?”

Victoria took a long time.

“Yes.”

That answer mattered.

Then Sophia:

“Why didn’t you call the ambulance?”

Victoria cried.

“I chose myself.”

Not panic.

Not legacy.

Not family.

Herself.

Sophia ended the meeting.

She did not hug her.

She did not curse.

She left.

Years later, she agreed to one more short visit.

Relationship never became grandmother-granddaughter again.

That was acceptable.

Reconciliation is not required for healing.
