Chapter 2 - Sanctuary in the Highlands

The Isle of Skye in late autumn was a wilderness of bruised skies, lashing rain, and mountains that looked like sleeping giants covered in brown heather.

Sienna stood at the window of the small, stone cottage she had rented on the edge of the Glen Brittle forest. Three weeks had passed since she fled Florence. She had changed her phone number, closed her social media accounts, and told her family only that she was safe and needed time. The Italian tabloids had run wild with stories of "The Runaway Billionaire Bride," but here, in this remote corner of Scotland, no one cared about Tuscan shipping empires.

Here, the only currency that mattered was wood for the fire and dry boots.

"You're staring at the rain again," a deep, quiet voice said from behind her.

Sienna turned to see Aiden, the man who managed the small communal herb farm and the ancient stone chapel at the end of the glen. He was thirty-two, with a quiet strength that seemed to mirror the mountains around them. He wore a patched woolen sweater, his dark hair damp from the rain, and his hands were calloused and stained with the dark, rich soil of the highlands.

Aiden had been the only one who didn't ask questions when she arrived at his doorstep three weeks ago, looking for a quiet place to stay. He had simply handed her a hot cup of tea and pointed her toward the cottage.

"I’m not used to the silence," Sienna said, her voice softer than it used to be. "In Florence, there was always noise. Traffic, music, negotiations. Here, the silence is so loud it makes my ears ring."

"It's not silence," Aiden said with a gentle smile, setting a basket of dry peat blocks by the fireplace. "It's just the earth breathing. You're just not used to listening to it."

He walked over to the wooden table, where a small basket of dried lavender and chamomile sat. He began to sort the buds with practiced, gentle fingers.

"Why do you stay here, Aiden?" Sienna asked, walking over to join him. "It's so remote. You have the hands of an artist, but you spend your days pulling weeds."

Aiden looked up, his eyes a warm, steady hazel. "I spent five years in London working as an architect. I built glass towers for people who never looked at the sky. I made a lot of money, but I lost my soul. When my father passed, I inherited this small chapel and the farm. I realized that I didn’t want to build monuments to men’s pride. I wanted to tend to the things God made."

He picked up a sprig of lavender, pressing it gently between his fingers to release the scent. "True peace doesn't cost anything, Sienna. But it costs everything to realize that."

Sienna looked at his hands—rough, dirty, but incredibly gentle. For the first time in her life, she felt a strange, quiet safety in the presence of a man. A safety that had nothing to do with contracts or banks, but everything to do with the simple, honest earth.
