Chapter 4 - Whispers of the Past

By the second month, the high highland winter began to settle in. The mountains were dusted with snow, and the nights became long, cold, and dark.

One afternoon, the local postman delivered a thick, cream-colored envelope to Sienna’s cottage. It bore the postmark of Florence.

With trembling hands, Sienna tore it open. It was a letter from Julian.

“Sienna,” it read. “Your little tantrum has gone on long enough. Your mother is embarrassed, and the Rossi board of directors is demanding answers. I have bought the debt of your uncle’s shipping firm. If you do not return to Florence by the end of the year to complete our arrangement, I will foreclose on his assets. Do not think you can hide in your little Scottish swamp forever. You belong here, with me.”

A cold wave of dread washed over Sienna. She slumped onto the wooden bench, the letter slipping from her fingers. The past was a shadow that refused to leave her.

A knock on the door startled her. It was Aiden, carrying a basket of dry firewood. He saw her pale face and the letter on the floor.

"Sienna? What is it?" he asked, setting the basket down.

"He found me," she whispered, her voice shaking. "Julian. He’s going to destroy my family’s business if I don't go back. He thinks he owns me because of a debt."

Aiden picked up the letter, his eyes scanning the harsh, demanding words. His jaw tightened, but his expression remained calm, grounded in a quiet, unshakable strength.

"He cannot own what belongs to God, Sienna," Aiden said softly, sitting beside her on the bench. "A debt is just paper. Your life is not paper."

"You don't understand, Aiden," Sienna cried, her tears finally spilling over. "In Florence, money is everything. If my family loses their business, they lose their identity. I feel so guilty. I ran away to save myself, but I left them to face the storm."

Aiden reached out, his warm hand gently covering her trembling ones. "When I was in London, my partner stole our firm’s designs and sued me for the rights. I lost everything—my company, my money, my reputation. I thought my life was over. I was so angry, so full of hatred."

He looked toward the window, where the small stone chapel stood against the dark sky. "But then I came here. I sat in that quiet chapel, and I realized that my identity wasn't built on my success. It was built on my faith. God didn't make me to be an architect of glass towers; He made me to be a steward of His peace. Julian can take their ships, Sienna, but he cannot take your soul unless you let him."

Sienna looked into Aiden’s eyes, finding a deep, protective harbor in his words. "What should I do?"

"You pray," Aiden said gently. "And then, you face him. Not with fear, but with the truth. The truth is a shield that no money can pierce."
