Chapter 1 - The Longest Journey

The air in the Al-Anbar Province of Iraq tasted like copper, dust, and impending violence. Sergeant Caleb Vance sat in the back of an armored Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV), his fingers mechanically tightening the straps on his plate carrier. Outside, a sandstorm was brewing, turning the horizon into a thick, choking sheet of orange fog.

But Caleb’s mind wasn’t on the storm outside. It was on the screen of his cracked, heavily encrypted tactical phone.

A single text message from his wife, Grace, was frozen on the display: “Caleb. It’s time. The doctor says the baby is coming early. There are complications. I’m scared. Please come home.”

His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. She was only thirty-four weeks along. For nine months, they had planned for a peaceful autumn delivery in North Carolina. Now, she was alone in a sterile hospital room, facing a high-risk delivery while he was stuck on the other side of the planet.

"Listen up, Vance!" his squad leader, Staff Sergeant Miller, barked, breaking Caleb's trance. "We got a green light from Command. Your emergency leave paperwork just got approved. We’re escorting you to the Al Asad Airbase right now. You’ve got a flight out in three hours. Let's get you home to your boy."

"Thank you, Sergeant," Caleb breathed, a wave of desperate relief washing over him. He tucked the phone into his chest pocket, right over his heart. "Let's move."

The JLTV's engine roared to life. The vehicle bounced over the uneven dirt roads, heading toward the highway. Caleb stared out the armored window, counting the seconds. Just three hours to the airbase. Then a flight to Germany. Then home.

Suddenly, a deafening explosion shattered the silence.

The lead vehicle in their convoy was engulfed in a massive fireball. An Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

"Ambussh! Left side! Left side!" Miller screamed over the radio as automatic gunfire began to rain down on their convoy, the heavy rounds clanging violently against their armor.

Caleb's vehicle swerved violently, the tires screeching as the driver struggled to maintain control. Caleb’s military instincts kicked in instantly. He grabbed his M4 rifle, but a cold sweat broke out across his forehead. He wasn't just fighting for his life anymore. He was fighting for his wife. He was fighting to see his son's first breath.

"Return fire!" Caleb roared, his voice cracking with a desperate, primal rage. "We are getting through this! I am going home!"
