"No," Grace whispered, the paper trembling in her hand. "You just got back. You're finally healing. They can't take you again."
Caleb sat beside her, his face grave. He had known this day might come. He was a specialist, one of the few who knew the terrain and the language.
"Grace, it's a rescue op," Caleb said softly, holding her hands. "It's for Miller's team. They got ambushed in the same sector where we were hit. If I don't go... they might not come back. I have to go."

"I will come back," Caleb said, his voice ringing with absolute, unshakable conviction. "I have a reason to live now. I have a home to return to. That sand has no hold on me anymore."
The night before his deployment, Caleb sat by Leo’s crib. He reached in, tucking the blue blanket with the embroidered barbell around his sleeping son.

"I'm going to make this world safe for you, little buddy," Caleb whispered, kissing his forehead. "And when I come back, I'm never leaving again. That's my iron promise to you."
The next morning, under a gray, drizzling North Carolina sky, Grace kissed Caleb goodbye at the deployment terminal. There were no words left to say. Only a silent, desperate prayer as she watched him walk through the security gates, his uniform sharp, his eyes focused.
