Chapter 3 - The First Tear

The heavy door to OR 3 swung open with a soft whoosh.
The sterile, bright lights of the operating room blinded Caleb for a split second. Then, he heard it.
A sharp, wet, incredibly loud cry. The sound of life.
"We have a healthy baby boy," Dr. Aris announced, her voice filled with relief.
Caleb walked forward, his knees trembling beneath him. He saw Grace, pale and exhausted, her eyes half-closed but shining with tears. The nurses quickly cleaned the newborn, wrapping him snugly in the blue blanket with the embroidered barbell.
"Caleb..." Grace breathed, her voice barely a whisper. "You're here. You made it."
Caleb fell to his knees beside her bed. The weight of the last seventy-two hours—the ambush, the flights, the terror of losing everything—crumbled him in an instant. He reached out his shaking, calloused hands, his dirty camo sleeves contrasting sharply with the pristine, sterile sheets.
The nurse gently placed the tiny bundle into Caleb's arms.
Leo.
Caleb looked down at his son. The boy had a patch of dark hair, a tiny button nose, and was squirming weakly inside his swaddle. As Caleb cradled him close, the baby let out a tiny whimper and opened his eyes, staring blankly up at his father.
A single, heavy tear slipped down Caleb's cheek, catching the light of the sterile room before landing softly on Leo's blanket. Caleb leaned his forehead against Grace's, his shoulders shaking as he wept silently.

"I'm here," Caleb sobbed, his voice raw with an emotion he had never felt before. "I've got you both. I'm never letting go. You're safe now."
Grace reached up, her fingers tangling in Caleb's short military haircut, her own tears flowing freely. In that small, quiet corner of the hospital, amidst the chaos of the world, they were finally whole.
