Chapter 9 - The Last Deploy

The mission in the Al-Anbar Province was a chaotic, high-intensity operations nightmare. The temperature reached 115 degrees, and the dust was suffocating. But Caleb was not the same soldier he was four months ago. He was calmer, his mind clear of the unresolved anger that had plagued him before. He had a anchor.

His team moved through the dark, narrow alleys of a hostile town, their night-vision goggles painting the world in a haunting green hue.

"Target building, fifty meters," Miller whispered over the comms.

Suddenly, the night erupted in gunfire.

Caleb’s team breached the building, moving with lethal, synchronized precision. They neutralized the hostile forces and located the captured soldiers, including several of his close friends, bound and bruised but alive in a dark basement.

"Vance! We've got incoming RPGs! We need to evacuate now!" the radio screamed.

As they began their tactical withdrawal, a rocket-propelled grenade struck the wall of the corridor directly in front of Caleb. The explosion threw him backward, his helmet flying off as brick and mortar collapsed onto his legs.

Caleb lay in the dust, his ears ringing, his vision fading. The familiar, suffocating darkness of the sand tried to claw its way back into his mind. He could hear the shouting of hostile fighters getting closer.

This is it, a dark voice whispered in his head. You're going to die here, just like your father did.

But then, through the haze of pain and smoke, Caleb saw a flash of blue.

He didn't see the sand. He saw the tiny, embroidered barbell on Leo's blanket. He heard his son's first, beautiful cry in the hospital room. He felt the warmth of Grace's hand in his.

"No," Caleb roared, his voice cutting through the ringing in his ears.

With a surge of adrenaline that defied his physical injuries, Caleb threw the heavy debris off his legs. He scrambled to his feet, grabbed his rifle, and laid down a fierce, devastating wall of fire that forced the approaching hostiles back, allowing his team to drag the rescued soldiers to the waiting extraction vehicles.

As the helicopter lifted off into the starry night sky, Caleb collapsed against the metal wall, his chest heaving, his body bruised and bleeding, but his heart singing with a fierce, triumphant joy.

He was going home. For good.
