Chapter 16 - BLACKWOOD HOTELS WITHOUT ME

I stepped down as chairman for eighteen months.

Not because I committed Nora’s crimes.

Because the governance review showed how disconnected I had become from adjacent family structures.

The board appointed Helena Brooks.

Independent.

Experienced.

Blackwood Hotels continued.

Guests checked in.

Employees worked.

Revenue arrived.

The world did not end because Ethan Blackwood missed meetings.

Humbling.

Healthy.

The descendant trust’s thirty-nine-percent protected block reviewed:

Related-party contracts.

Family office expenses.

Domestic services.

Asset sales.

Most company operations were fine.

Nora’s fraud sat around the edges.

Domestic vendors.

Family administration.

Private properties.

A few hotel-service contracts inflated through Hale entities.

Restitution followed.

No giant company collapse.

The board removed automatic family-chair succession.

Good.

When I returned, it was as one nonexecutive director.

One vote.

No title of chairman.

I had Lily.

I had a life.

I no longer needed the company to prove I still belonged somewhere after Amelia.

That realization took years.

The market did not care.

Also healthy.
