Chapter 25 - AMELIA’S LAST LETTER

One document remained unopened.
A sealed letter Amelia wrote during pregnancy.
To Lily.
The trustee held it until Lily turned thirty-five because that was the age Amelia specified.
Lily called me.
“Come over.”
I did.
She opened it at her kitchen table.
My daughter,
If you are reading this, then either I became dramatically organized or something went wrong.
Lily laughed through tears.
Amelia continued.
She wrote about no trust percentage.
No Nora.
No warning.
She wrote:
Your father pretends he hates sentimental things. This is false.
I objected.
Lily ignored me.
She wrote:
If you have his eyes, use them to roll at him.
Lily looked at me.
“Done.”
Then:
If you inherit money, learn what it can do and what it cannot. It can buy safety sometimes. It cannot make people safe.
That sentence stopped both of us.
Finally:
You do not owe the Blackwoods a career. You do not owe the Hales forgiveness. You do not owe me perfection. Become a person, not a family project.
Lily cried.
So did I.
Nothing about her mother’s death.
Because Amelia did not know she was writing a final message.
That made it more precious.
Life.
Not evidence.

Lily kept the letter.
