Chapter 6 - THE DEAD CHILD’S ACCOUNT
The Blackwood Descendant Reserve should have closed if Lily died.
It didn’t.
Instead, it entered:
PROVISIONAL PROTECTED STATUS.
Why?
The family office produced a four-year-old document.
There had been uncertainty surrounding the infant’s remains.
Someone in compliance noticed the hospital records were inconsistent.
The independent trustee refused to terminate the beneficiary file completely.
Good.
They requested additional proof.
Family administration responded:
Child presumed deceased; family requests confidentiality while records are reconciled.
Family representative:
Nora Hale.
My housekeeper.
“How did she become family representative?” I asked.
The director looked miserable.
“Emergency domestic proxy.”
“Who signed?”
“My father.”
Maybe.
Jonathan Blackwood had been alive.
He trusted Nora.
He was also dying.

The trustee kept Lily’s reserve active but frozen except for expenses tied to “beneficiary-location and dependent-care investigation.”
Nora billed the trust for exactly that.

Dependent care.

Medical support.
In reality, at least some money paid Ruth to keep Lily hidden.
The cruelty was astonishing.
Money intended to locate my daughter financed her disappearance.
The reserve held far more than the annual care payments.
Blackwood family structure again.
My father created a descendant trust after selling part of Blackwood Hotels years earlier.
I knew generally.
Not details.
Leah looked at me.
“You are chairman.”
“Of the operating company.”
“Your family is allergic to reading the entities adjacent to it.”
“I’m noticing.”
The reserve generated allocations because Lily was Jonathan’s first grandchild.
If she lived.
What did activation mean?

The trustee, Martin Shaw, confirmed only:
“A living Blackwood descendant would trigger governance changes.”

Motive.
Maybe.
Not proof of murder.
Nora had benefited financially from Lily remaining “missing” instead of confirmed alive or dead.
As administrator, she controlled expense requests.
But why kill Amelia?
If she did.

Serena finally let me watch an enhanced transcript without audio playback.
AMELIA:
Stop bringing me that tea.
NORA:
The doctor said fluids.
AMELIA:
The doctor did not say you decide what I drink.
NORA:
You need to rest.

NORA:
You don’t know anything.
AMELIA:
Jonathan showed me the schedule.

AMELIA:
If anything happens to me, Ethan gets everything.
NORA:
That’s what you think.
My skin went cold.
No poisoning shown.
But they were arguing about the descendant structure before Amelia died.
The lab reexamining Amelia’s preserved tissue found a trace compound not covered by the original screen.
Not enough yet.

The same compound was being investigated in residue from my shattered teacup.
When Serena told me, I asked:
“Did Nora try to kill me?”
She answered:
“We do not know.”
