Chapter 24 - MY DAUGHTER BECOMES A LAWYER
Lily became a child-advocacy attorney.
Not because destiny required trauma careers.
She also loved argument.
Always had.
Her first major case involved a grandmother seeking emergency custody.
The grandmother might actually have been right.
Lily told me:
“I hated the petition on sight.”
“What did you do?”
“Read the evidence.”
“And?”
“The parents were using drugs. Grandma was safe.”
“Hard?”
“Yes.”
“Good lawyer?”
“Maybe.”
Trauma can bias judgment.
Professionalism requires noticing.
She won temporary protection for the child.
Then helped build a reunification plan for the parents.
No dynasty.
No Blackwood role.
She later joined a nonprofit working on child identity fraud and guardianship abuse.
She did not use her own case in fundraising.
Public record already existed.
Still hers.
At thirty-two, she taught a seminar.
One sentence reached me through a colleague:
A child’s identity should never depend on which adult controls the paperwork.
I sat with that for a long time.
Four years of Lily’s life had been hidden behind papers adults did not verify.
Now she was making systems harder to exploit.
