Chapter 11 - THE BOY WHO STOPPED STANDING AGAINST WALLS
Once Chad disappeared from daily life, Leo did not become instantly happy.
He got worse first.
Nightmares.
Food hiding.
Flinching when I raised my voice on the phone.
Standing against walls voluntarily after spilling juice.
The first time, I found him in the hallway.
Hands at sides.
Eyes down.
“What are you doing?”
“Waiting.”
“For what?”
“Tap.”
My throat closed.
“No tap.”
He stayed.
“Leo.”
Nothing.
I sat on the floor.
Not touching him.
“You can leave the wall.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
He stepped away slowly.
Then cried.

No asking him to repeat Chad stories constantly.

“Do not praise him every time he relaxes.”
“Why?”
“Because then relaxation becomes another performance for adults.”
So I learned to be ordinary.
Breakfast.
Shoes.
Preschool.
Bath.
Stories.
One night he said:
“Daddy was braver.”
“Than who?”
“You.”
I laughed.
“Probably.”
“Chad says soldiers don’t cry.”
“Chad was wrong.”
“Daddy cry?”
“Yes.”
I had seen Daniel cry three times.
Our mother’s funeral.
Leo’s birth.
A dog dying when we were teenagers.
“Did you?”
“Yeah.”
“War?”
I paused.
“Sometimes after.”
He nodded.
No hero mythology.
Meanwhile, Sentinel Ridge compared Chad’s patent application with Daniel’s notebooks.
The overlap was substantial.
Interface flow.
Failover-routing logic.
Child-safe activation sequence.
But patents are technical.
Ideas can overlap.
Experts examined.
Mercer Response’s attorney claimed independent development.
Then investigators found files on Chad’s old laptop.
Daniel’s filename convention.
Creation dates from before Chad’s company existed.
Copied.
Civil claim strengthened.
Possible trade-secret theft.
Prosecutors reviewed.
No automatic prison.
Chad’s criminal child-abuse case remained separate.
Victor Hale faced bar investigation for potentially using Anna’s credentials and misrepresenting records.
He denied knowing credentials were unauthorized.
Evidence would decide.
Dr. Voss received professional discipline for overreliance on edited collateral video and failing to insist on direct assessment before writing recommendations later used in court.
No conspiracy charge.
Again:
Careless adults can harm without joining the mastermind.
The family court granted me three more months of temporary guardianship.
Then a review.
I wanted permanent immediately.
Dr. Ellis asked why.
“Security.”
“For Leo or you?”
I hated her.
“For both.”
“Only one of you is the child.”
