Chapter 17 - DANIEL’S VOICE
The emergency phone contained one feature nobody told me about.
A stored parental message.
Encrypted.
Unlock condition:
Leo age six.
North Coast authorization.
The day after his sixth birthday, Helen asked if I wanted to hear it first.
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“It’s his.”
Leo chose.
We sat with Dr. Ellis.
The phone played Daniel’s voice.
Older than Leo remembered.
“Hey, buddy.”
Leo froze.
“Daddy.”
Daniel continued.
“If you’re hearing this, you’re probably old enough to understand that I might not be around.”
Leo began crying.
I reached toward him.
Stopped.
He reached for me.
Then I held him.
Daniel:
“I hope Mom is there. I hope Uncle Jackson is being annoying. I hope none of this emergency stuff ever mattered.”
A laugh.
Then:
“If somebody tells you being scared makes you weak, they’re wrong. If a grown-up tells you a secret that hurts you, tell another grown-up.”
Leo looked at me.
Daniel:
“The phone is not because I think bad things will happen. It’s because good systems exist before we need them.”
That was Daniel.
Engineer to the end.
Then:
“Uncle Jackson loves you. He also thinks he can solve everything by standing in doorways looking angry. Don’t let him.”
I laughed while crying.
Leo laughed too.
Then:
“You do not belong to him. You do not belong to Mom. You do not belong to the Army. You do not belong to my company. You are you.”
The recording ended.
Leo replayed it once.
Then not again for months.
I saved a copy under trust protocol.
No social media.
