Chapter 22 - THE PHONE RECORDING

At twenty-six, Leo asked to hear the full emergency audio from the night I found him.
I had not listened since trial.
He had heard excerpts.
Not all.
We sat in my kitchen.
No therapist required now.
His choice.
Audio:
Chad.
“Cry louder. Maybe your dad can hear you from heaven.”
Leo’s child voice.
“My dad told me to call this number if I was scared.”
Glass.
My voice.
“Put the bat down and get away from him!”
Then Chad:
“This is family business.”
Then:
Impact.
Silence.
Me:
“I am his family.”
Leo paused the recording.
“That line is dramatic.”
“I was thirty-two.”
“You were military dramatic.”
“I saved you.”
“You punched an accountant with a baseball bat.”
“Construction manager.”
“Even worse.”
We laughed.
Then he became quiet.
“I remember your shoes.”
“What?”
“Boots.”
“I was wearing boots.”
“They stopped right in front of me.”
I had remembered Chad’s bat.
Leo remembered boots.
Children keep different evidence.
He finished the recording.
Then asked North Coast to retain one sealed archival copy and destroy redundant family-office copies after legal retention requirements.
