Chapter 12 - KEVIN’S DEBT

Kevin’s branch had not simply been spent on Madison.
That was another lie.
His business.
Commercial landscaping company.
Expansion.
Equipment loans.
One failed contract.
Tax debt.
He borrowed from his branch repeatedly.
Then refinanced his house.
Then private school became difficult.
Dad started “equalizing.”
Madison’s needs were the respectable category.
Tennis.
School.
Travel.
Behind those payments, Kevin’s money could cover debt.
My branch was indirectly subsidizing his financial mistakes.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked him.
“Because you’d judge me.”
“Maybe.”
“There.”
“That does not authorize forgery.”
“I didn’t forge your signature.”
“Who uploaded the forms?”
His silence.
“Kevin.”
“I reused the old authorization.”
There.
Finally.
“You copied my signature?”
“I thought Dad had approval.”
“From me?”
“Conceptually.”
I laughed.
“Conceptually?”
“You said you’d help Madison.”
“So you copied my signature onto documents I never saw?”
He rubbed his face.
“I thought we’d fix it later.”
