Across the mahogany table, Vanessa laughed—a high, sharp sound that echoed off the high ceilings. Little Lily sat beside her, staring blankly at her plate, a small patch of her scalp still delicate where Vanessa’s cruelty had touched her days ago.

"She's so quiet today, Julian," Vanessa cooed, leaning over to touch Julian’s arm. "I think the new routine is finally teaching her some discipline."
Julian didn't answer immediately. His dark eyes flicked from Vanessa's overly bright smile down to his daughter's trembling hands. He had noticed the way Lily shrank away whenever Vanessa moved too quickly.
