Chapter 1: The Envelope at the Gate

Three months after Margaret Crane was taken away in handcuffs, an unmarked envelope appeared outside the Whitmore mansion.

There was no stamp.

No return address.

It had been pushed beneath the iron gate sometime before sunrise.

Marcus Hale found it during his morning security inspection.

He did not open it.

Instead, he carried it directly to Daniel’s study and placed it on the desk.

Daniel stared at the envelope.

“Was anyone caught on camera?”

Marcus shook his head.

“The person stayed beyond the east camera’s range. They knew exactly where our blind spot used to be.”

Daniel’s expression tightened.

That blind spot had been repaired after Margaret’s arrest.

Only someone familiar with the old security system would have known about it.

Elena entered the study a moment later.

Lily was still asleep upstairs.

“What happened?” she asked.

Daniel carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

It showed Margaret sitting across from a man inside a small restaurant.

The picture had been taken through a window.

Margaret was not wearing her nanny’s uniform. She wore a dark coat and held a thick envelope of cash beneath the table.

The man facing her was Owen Mercer.

Daniel’s chief financial officer.

His closest business adviser.

The man who had stood beside Daniel at his wedding.

Elena slowly sat down.

“That picture was taken before Paris,” she whispered.

A date had been printed in the corner.

Two weeks before Daniel and Elena left the country.

Marcus turned the photograph over.

Three words had been written across the back.

She wasn’t working alone.

Daniel stared at Owen’s face.

For twelve years, Owen had managed the Whitmore family’s accounts, private investments, and charitable foundation.

He knew the mansion’s security arrangements.

He knew when Daniel traveled.

He also knew the location of every important document inside the house.

Daniel reached for his phone.

“I’m calling him.”

Marcus caught his wrist.

“No.”

Daniel looked at him.

“If Owen knows we have this picture, he may destroy whatever evidence is left.”

Elena’s eyes shifted toward the ceiling.

Toward Lily’s bedroom.

“Why would Owen need Margaret?”

No one answered immediately.

Then Marcus remembered something.

He opened the report from the night Margaret was arrested.

Inside the locked library cabinet, police had found jewelry, cash, telephone cords, and broken camera equipment.

But one item had never been explained.

A copied key to Daniel’s private office safe.

Marcus placed the report beside the photograph.

“This wasn’t only about stealing jewelry,” he said.

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“What was in the safe?”

“Confidential contracts,” Elena answered. “Foundation records. Investment agreements.”

“And documents that could give someone access to nearly three hundred million dollars,” Daniel added.

The room fell silent.

Upstairs, a floorboard creaked.

Elena turned.

Lily stood in the doorway.

She wore her pale blue robe and held her stuffed rabbit against her chest.

Her eyes were fixed on the photograph.

“I know that man,” she whispered.

Daniel immediately moved toward her.

“Lily, you don’t have to look at this.”

But Lily did not step away.

She pointed at Owen Mercer.

“He came to the library when you were gone.”

Marcus straightened.

“What did he do?”

Lily’s fingers tightened around the rabbit.

“He opened Daddy’s wall.”

Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.

The safe was hidden behind a painting.

Very few people knew it existed.

Lily looked at her parents.

“When I saw him, Margaret told me I had dreamed it.”

Her voice trembled.

“Then she started counting.”
