Chapter 4: Lily’s Voice

Daniel refused.

Elena refused.

The prosecutor explained that Lily could give her statement from a private room through a closed video system. She would not have to enter the courtroom or stand near Margaret.

Still, Daniel could not accept it.

His daughter had already been forced to relive enough.

That night, Lily overheard her parents arguing in the study.

“I won’t put her in front of that woman,” Daniel said.

“And if Margaret’s information stops Owen from hurting another family?” Elena asked.

“That is not Lily’s responsibility.”

“No, it isn’t.”

Elena’s voice softened.

“But maybe Lily deserves the choice.”

The next morning, they explained everything to her with Dr. Bennett present.

Lily listened quietly.

“You don’t have to speak,” Daniel told her. “No one will be disappointed.”

“Will Margaret see me?”

“On a screen,” Elena said. “We’ll be beside you.”

“Can she hurt me?”

“Never again.”

Lily thought for a long time.

Then she looked toward Daniel.

“She always said no one would believe me.”

Daniel took her hand.

“I believe you.”

“I want her to know that.”

The hearing took place two days later.

Lily sat in a private room with her parents, Dr. Bennett, and a child advocate.

Margaret appeared on the screen wearing a plain prison uniform.

For the first time since her arrest, she looked small.

But when she saw Lily, something cold returned to her eyes.

“Hello, Lily.”

Lily moved closer to her father.

The prosecutor began with simple questions.

Lily described the library.

The notebook.

The missing phone.

Owen at the safe.

Margaret’s numbered list.

Margaret’s attorney suggested the child might have misunderstood ordinary discipline.

Lily stared at the screen.

“It wasn’t ordinary.”

The attorney shifted.

“Margaret says you frequently lied.”

“She told me to lie.”

“About what?”

“That I fell down the stairs. That I lost Mommy’s jewelry. That Owen was never there.”

Margaret leaned toward the microphone.

“You were a difficult child.”

Daniel’s hand tightened around the edge of the table.

Lily flinched.

Then she slowly lifted her chin.

“You counted every time.”

The room became silent.

“You wrote the numbers because you wanted me to remember.”

Margaret said nothing.

Lily’s voice shook, but she continued.

“I do remember.”

She held her rabbit against her chest.

“But I also remember the door opening.”

Daniel lowered his head, fighting tears.

“My daddy came back.”

Margaret looked away.

The prosecutor placed the notebook into evidence.

Under the pressure of Lily’s testimony and the recovered recordings, Margaret finally agreed to cooperate.

She revealed that Owen planned to leave the United States using a private medical transport plane.

The flight was scheduled for the following morning.

She also gave investigators the name of the airfield.

Federal agents rushed there before dawn.

They found the plane.

They found Owen’s luggage.

They found a passport with his photograph and another man’s name.

But Owen Mercer was not there.

A mechanic claimed Owen had changed his plans after receiving a warning call.

Only three people had known the location of the airfield.

The prosecutor.

Margaret.

And someone inside the Whitmore investigation.

Marcus studied the security footage from the courthouse.

One person had left the building minutes after Margaret revealed Owen’s location.

Daniel’s longtime attorney, Charles Vance.

The man who had advised Daniel to step down.

The man who had controlled the Whitmore family’s legal documents for twenty years.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Owen still has someone protecting him.”
