CHAPTER 12 BLOODLINE

The underground room extended beneath the entire lake house.
It contained medical equipment, storage cabinets, and shelves filled with biological samples.
Hundreds of names were printed across refrigerated drawers.
Daniel found his own.
Elena’s.
Nathan’s.
Lily’s.
Mara’s drawer was empty.
Clara opened a locked cabinet.
Inside were reports describing a procedure labeled FAMILIAL REASSIGNMENT.
Daniel read the first paragraph.
“They used stored tissue to alter paternity tests.”
Nathan looked toward him.
“Arthur could make any child appear connected to any family.”
“That’s why the DNA says Mara is mine.”
Clara shook her head.
“Possibly. But the alteration would have to happen inside the laboratory unless they changed the sample before it arrived.”
Daniel remembered the blood taken from Mara at the mansion.
The nurse had been hired through Clara’s medical contractor list.
Another potential breach.
Nathan opened a drawer labeled C. MERCER.
Inside was a photograph of Celia holding a newborn.
The child wore a silver bracelet marked 201.
Nathan’s voice broke.
“That’s Mara.”
On the back, Celia had written:
FOR NATHAN, WHEN IT IS SAFE.
Nathan sat down.
For the first time since his arrest, he looked less like a guilty man seeking survival and more like a father understanding what had been stolen.
Daniel did not forgive him.
But he recognized the pain.
Clara found an audio recorder beside the photograph.
Celia’s voice played.
“Nathan, Arthur knows about the baby. He says he can protect her. I no longer believe him. Rebecca says there is one family he cannot control. I’m taking Mara to the Whitmores.”
The recording ended with a crash.
Then Arthur’s voice.
“Delete the mother. Reassign the child.”
Mara was Nathan’s daughter.
Arthur had altered her records to make her appear connected to Daniel.
But why?
Daniel searched the remaining files.
He found the answer in a document labeled SUCCESSION.
If Bellweather lost control of Lily, ownership of its protected assets would pass to Subject 201.
Mara had not been sent to hurt Lily.
She had been prepared to replace her.
Daniel called Elena.
No answer.
He called Marcus’s security team at the mansion.
No answer.
Clara checked the remote system.
The entire property had gone offline.
Then Daniel’s phone connected to a video call.
Elena appeared on the screen.
She was seated in the foundation office.
Police officers stood behind her.
“What happened?” Daniel asked.
“Federal agents arrived with a warrant.”
Clara moved beside him.
“I didn’t authorize a raid.”
Elena turned the camera.
Officers carried boxes of files from the Lily Project headquarters.
A man in a dark suit stepped into view.
“Daniel Whitmore?”
“Yes.”
“This is Deputy Director Holden. You are required to surrender immediately.”
“On what charges?”
“Financial fraud, witness manipulation, unlawful surveillance, and the disappearance of four children connected to the Lily Project.”
Daniel stared at him.
“The network planted evidence.”
“The evidence includes bank transfers authorized with your credentials.”
“My identity was stolen.”
“We also have video of you entering St. Agnes Academy six months ago.”
“I had never been there before tonight.”
Holden continued.
“Your wife’s credentials were used to sign false medical reports.”
Elena looked toward Daniel.
“They’re turning Arthur’s crimes into ours.”
A second video feed appeared on Daniel’s phone.
It showed Lily sitting in the library with Mara.
A woman stood behind them.
Her face remained outside the frame.
She placed a blue cup beside Lily.
Lily looked toward the camera.
“Dad, the police say they have to take you away.”
Daniel’s chest tightened.
“Listen to your mother. Stay with her.”
The unseen woman leaned toward Lily.
A scarred hand touched the child’s shoulder.
Daniel shouted.
“Get away from her!”
The woman moved into view.
She had Elena’s face.
Isabel.
She smiled toward the camera.
“Bring me Rebecca’s ledger, Daniel.”
“I don’t have it.”
“You’re standing above it.”
Daniel looked around the underground room.
“What happens if I refuse?”
Isabel placed the second brass key against Lily’s neck.
“Then Subject 200 becomes Lily Bell.”
The video ended.
Outside the lake house, sirens approached.
Clara looked through the window.
“Federal vehicles.”
Nathan took Mara’s photograph.
“You need to escape.”
Daniel closed the file cabinet.
“Running makes me look guilty.”
“Staying gives them control.”
Clara checked her weapon.
“Someone sent legitimate federal officers with fabricated evidence. This reaches higher than Arthur ever did.”
The front door burst open.
Agents entered.
Daniel raised his hands.
Nathan disappeared through the underground passage.
Clara hid the SUCCESSION file beneath her coat.
Deputy Director Holden descended the stairs.
He placed Daniel in handcuffs.
As Daniel was led outside, he saw Nathan moving between the trees.
Mara’s photograph remained in his hand.

Nathan looked back once.
Then vanished into the darkness.
