CHAPTER 14: LILY’S SECRET

Lily sat between her parents inside the prosecutor’s private office.

The numbered notebook rested on the desk.

She stared at the black check beside the final line.

“Did you make this mark?” the prosecutor asked.

Lily nodded.

Daniel looked at her in surprise.

“When?”

“The first night after we came home.”

“Why didn’t you tell us?” Elena asked gently.

“I thought you would be mad.”

“At you?” Daniel moved closer. “Never.”

Lily touched the notebook.

“Margaret said the last number would teach me not to question her.”

Her fingers trembled, but she continued.

“When Daddy came through the door, she didn’t finish.”

“So you checked the box?” the prosecutor asked.

Lily nodded again.

“Because the last lesson wasn’t hers.”

“What was it?”

Lily looked at her father.

“That she was wrong.”

The prosecutor then showed her the brass key found inside the stuffed rabbit.

“Do you remember putting this inside?”

For several seconds, Lily said nothing.

Then fragments of memory began returning.

On the third night after her parents left for Paris, Lily heard Margaret speaking through the library wall.

She listened from behind the shelves.

Margaret told someone that Lily would soon reveal the safe code.

That night, Lily entered the hidden passage after Margaret fell asleep.

She found the secret chamber and saw the photographs of other children.

She also found a small recording device on the desk.

Lily took it.

When Margaret began searching her room the next morning, Lily cut open the seam beneath her rabbit’s arm and hid the device and the key inside.

The threatening note had been added later by Samuel Pike.

The prosecutor carefully opened the rabbit again.

Investigators had found the key but had never searched deeper beneath the compacted cotton.

A tiny recorder remained near the rabbit’s chest.

Marcus connected it to a computer.

The first files contained only movement and breathing.

Then Evelyn’s voice filled the room.

“You will give me the code tomorrow.”

Lily could be heard crying.

“I don’t know it.”

“You do.”

“No.”

Arthur’s voice then came through a speakerphone.

“Increase the pressure. We cannot wait until the parents return.”

The recordings documented multiple conversations between Arthur and Evelyn.

They discussed the trust.

The stolen jewelry.

The plan to accuse Lily.

The staged camera failures.

Arthur’s voice was unmistakable.

Daniel turned away as one recording captured Lily quietly begging Margaret to let her call home.

Elena pressed both hands over her mouth.

Lily looked between them.

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel immediately knelt beside her.

“For what?”

“I should have told you about the rabbit.”

“You were trying to survive.”

“I was scared Margaret would find it.”

Daniel took her hand.

“You protected evidence that helped stop her from doing this to another child.”

The recorder transformed the case.

Arthur Bell’s attorneys withdrew their request for bail.

Evelyn Marsh abandoned her claim that she had misunderstood Elena’s instructions.

Nathan pleaded guilty to conspiracy, unlawful surveillance and obstruction. He accepted responsibility publicly, refusing his attorneys’ attempts to minimize his involvement.

“I opened the door,” he told the court. “Arthur and Evelyn walked through it. Lily paid the price for my jealousy.”

The main trial lasted six weeks.

Because of her age, Lily did not testify inside the crowded courtroom. She spoke from a private room with a therapist and the judge present.

Arthur watched through a video screen.

He never apologized.

Evelyn avoided looking at Lily.

During closing arguments, prosecutors placed the numbered notebook beside the stuffed rabbit.

“One represented terror,” the prosecutor told the jury. “The other represented courage.”

The jury deliberated for three days.

On the fourth morning, Daniel, Elena and Lily entered the courthouse through a private entrance.

Nathan sat several rows behind them in custody.

Arthur and Evelyn stood beside their attorneys.

The judge entered.

The courtroom rose.

A court clerk handed the jury’s decision to the judge.

He read it silently.

Then he looked toward the defendants.

“The jury has reached a verdict.”

Lily slipped her hand into her father’s.

The judge unfolded the paper.
