CHAPTER 14 THE FIRST FOUNDER

Clara traced the call to a coastal property owned by a corporation connected to Rebecca Whitmore.
Daniel was released temporarily after his attorney proved that the financial authorization video had been altered.
He was not cleared.
His accounts remained frozen.
The Lily Project remained closed.
But Deputy Director Holden could no longer justify holding him without a hearing.
Daniel returned home after midnight.
Lily ran into his arms.
He held her longer than usual.
“I knew you would come back,” she whispered.
“I’m sorry you had to wonder.”
“I didn’t wonder.”
He understood she was trying to comfort him.
That made his heart ache more.
Mara remained beside Nathan near the staircase.
She had not forgiven him.
But she had allowed him to sit near her.
For Nathan, that was enough.
Clara showed Daniel the video of Rebecca and the Lantern group.
“Your mother tried to expose Bellweather.”
“Arthur claims she chose Lily.”
“He could be manipulating you.”
“He also knew about the hospital nurse.”
Elena joined them.
“I remember the woman.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What?”
“The nurse who tried to take Lily. I remember her eyes.”
“Was it Rebecca?”
“I had never seen your mother’s photograph at that age. But the woman had the same eyes.”
Lily sat quietly.
“Did Grandma try to take me?”
Elena answered honestly.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel opened the map.
The coastal property appeared near the place marked with a triangle.
W-201.
Clara wanted to go alone.
Daniel refused.
Nathan insisted on joining them.
Mara insisted on staying with Lily.
No one argued.
The coastal house stood above a rocky cliff.
Waves crashed against the shore below.
The front door opened before they knocked.
An elderly woman stood inside.
She had white hair, clear blue eyes, and a cane in one hand.
Daniel recognized her from his childhood.
“Mrs. Vale?”
Agnes Vale had been his mother’s personal assistant.
She had disappeared after Rebecca’s sailing accident.
Agnes stepped aside.
“You took longer than your mother expected.”
Daniel entered.
“Rebecca is alive?”
Agnes closed the door.
“Sometimes.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means Rebecca Whitmore has used more than one name and more than one face for a very long time.”
Clara showed her the photograph of Sophie.
“Who copied my sister?”
Agnes looked at Clara with sadness.
“Your sister volunteered.”
“For what?”
“To enter Bellweather.”
“She was a child.”
“She was seventeen when she returned.”
Clara shook her head.
“Sophie never returned to them.”
“Not to Arthur. To Rebecca.”
Agnes led them into a room filled with old monitors.
Recorded interviews covered one wall.
Children described manipulated guardianships, false diagnoses, and stolen inheritances.
“Lantern gathered the evidence Arthur tried to erase,” Agnes said.
“Then why didn’t Rebecca give it to the police?” Daniel asked.
“Because judges, officers, doctors, and prosecutors were involved. She trusted no institution completely.”
“She trusted children instead?”
“She trusted the evidence adults overlooked.”
Daniel thought of Lily’s recorder.
“Did she choose Lily?”
Agnes did not answer.
Daniel moved closer.
“My daughter suffered for months. Did my mother know?”
“Rebecca knew Arthur had targeted your family.”
“And she did nothing?”
“She believed intervening too early would cause Arthur to move Lily permanently.”
Daniel’s anger broke through.
“So she watched?”
“Rebecca lost herself trying to save everyone.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“No,” Agnes said. “It is a warning.”
Nathan examined the monitors.
One live feed showed the Whitmore mansion.
Lily and Mara sat together in the library.
Daniel stepped toward the screen.
“Why are you watching my house?”
“We aren’t.”
Agnes reached for the controls.
“The feed is coming from outside this property.”
Another screen activated.
It showed a woman sitting in a white room.
Her gray hair rested against her shoulders.
A newspaper lay on the table beside her.
Today’s date was visible.
Daniel recognized her immediately.
Rebecca Whitmore.
His mother looked directly into the camera.
“Daniel, if you are seeing this, Arthur has lost control.”
Daniel touched the screen.
“Where are you?”
The recording continued.
“You will be told I created Lantern to protect children. That is only partly true. I created it because I helped build Bellweather.”
Daniel stepped backward.
Rebecca lowered her eyes.
“I believed families like ours needed protection from outsiders. Arthur taught me that the greatest danger often comes from the people already inside the house.”
The screen flickered.
“Do not trust the Custodian.”
Daniel waited.
Rebecca leaned toward the camera.
“And do not trust Clara Wynn.”
Everyone turned toward Clara.
Clara looked genuinely stunned.
The lights went out.
A gunshot came from the hallway.
When the emergency lights activated, Agnes lay on the floor.
Clara was gone.
So was the drive containing Rebecca’s recording.

On the dark monitor, one sentence appeared.
CLARA HAS RETURNED HOME.
