CHAPTER 12: THE FALSE ORDER

Daniel’s shout shook the entire second floor.
Marcus rushed into Lily’s bedroom.
“Lock every gate!”
Elena grabbed the notebook.
“No. Lily was downstairs with the investigator.”
They ran toward the family room.
The child welfare investigator lay on the carpet, conscious but disoriented. Her partner was calling for medical assistance.
“A man came in with an emergency removal order,” she explained. “He had a court badge and two security officers.”
“What man?” Daniel demanded.
“He said his name was Arthur Bell.”
Elena’s knees nearly gave way.
Arthur had not climbed through Lily’s bedroom window.
He had opened it to create a false trail.
Then he had walked through the front door carrying forged documents and taken Lily in front of government investigators.
Marcus accessed the exterior cameras.
A black sedan had left the property seven minutes earlier.
Police units began searching every road.
Daniel called Arthur again.
This time, the attorney answered by video.
Lily sat in the back seat beside him.
Her hands were not tied, but fear filled her eyes.
“Daddy?”
“I’m here,” Daniel said. “I’m coming for you.”
Arthur turned the camera toward himself.
He was sixty-two, silver-haired and perfectly calm.
“I advised your father for most of my adult life,” he said. “I protected your family from scandals you never knew existed.”
“You put Evelyn in my home.”
“I created an opportunity.”
“You hurt my daughter.”
“Evelyn became undisciplined. Her methods were excessive.”
Daniel’s voice cracked with rage.
“You ordered her to do it.”
“I ordered her to obtain a safe code.”
The safe contained the original Whitmore trust amendment, private voting certificates and evidence Daniel’s father had collected against several powerful business partners.
Arthur needed those documents to seize control of the company.
“You will open the safe,” Arthur continued. “Nathan will bring me the contents.”
“Where?”
“I’ll contact you.”
“If you touch Lily—”
“I am not Evelyn. The child is valuable alive and unharmed.”
Lily turned her face away from him.
Arthur ended the call.
Marcus traced the signal to three different towers. Arthur was using equipment that moved the connection between locations.
Nathan entered the room.
“This is my fault.”
Daniel turned on him.
“Arthur knew about your payments to Margaret. He used you.”
Nathan’s face twisted with shame.
“I gave him the idea.”
Everyone became still.
Nathan sat down.
“Years ago, I complained to Arthur that Father trusted you more than me. Arthur suggested placing someone inside the house to learn what you were planning.”
“You chose Margaret.”
“Evelyn,” Nathan corrected quietly. “Arthur introduced us.”
Elena looked at him with disgust.
“You brought that woman into Lily’s life.”
“I didn’t know what she was.”
“You didn’t care what she was.”
Nathan lowered his head.
“You’re right.”
Daniel opened the private safe.
Inside were sealed envelopes, trust documents and a small storage drive.
Marcus began replacing the contents with identical folders containing tracking devices.
Nathan watched.
“Arthur will inspect them.”
“Then we make him believe he doesn’t have time.”
Elena’s phone rang.
Lily’s voice came through the speaker.
“Mommy?”
Elena nearly collapsed with relief.
“Baby, where are you?”
“I don’t know. There are trees. And I hear bells.”
Arthur took the phone.
“She was allowed one sentence.”
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Trees and bells.
It was not much.
Then Lily shouted in the background.
“The clock has no twelve!”
The call ended.
Nathan’s head snapped up.
“I know that clock.”
Their father had owned a hunting lodge beside Lake Ashbourne. A storm had destroyed part of the clock tower years earlier, including the metal number twelve.
The property had been abandoned since his death.
Arthur gave them one hour to deliver the safe’s contents.
Nathan volunteered to carry the case.
Daniel refused.
“He expects you.”
“He’ll kill Lily if you change the plan.”
Daniel stared at the brother who had begun the conspiracy.
Then he handed him the case.
Nathan took it with trembling hands.
“If I don’t come back—”
“You’re coming back,” Daniel said. “You’re going to live long enough to answer for what you did.”
Nathan nodded.
They drove toward the lake with police units following at a distance.
At the final intersection, Arthur called again.
“Only Nathan continues.”
Nathan drove through the iron gates alone.
Daniel watched the tracking signal move toward the abandoned lodge.
Then it stopped.
A second signal appeared beside it.
Lily’s bracelet.
Marcus leaned toward the screen.
“They’re together.”
May you like
A gunshot echoed across the lake.
Both signals disappeared.
