PART 2 : CHAPTER 1 THE GIRL AT THE GATE

The first anniversary of the Lily Project was supposed to be quiet.

Daniel had refused interviews.

Elena had canceled the formal dinner suggested by the board.

Lily had asked for pizza, chocolate cake, and a movie in the upstairs library.

That was enough.

By nine that evening, most of the staff had gone home. Rain pressed against the mansion windows, and the security lights reflected across the wet lawn.

Lily sat between her parents beneath a blanket.

Her stuffed rabbit rested against her chest.

For nearly an hour, she laughed at the movie.

Daniel noticed every laugh.

A year earlier, he would have taken those moments for granted.

Now he understood that joy was something a child sometimes had to learn again.

The movie had just ended when the front gate alarm sounded.

One sharp tone.

Then silence.

Daniel looked toward the security panel.

The screen was black.

Elena sat upright.

“Did the power fail?”

“The lights are still on.”

Daniel reached for his phone.

No signal.

Then someone began pounding on the front gate.

Not ringing the intercom.

Pounding.

Three strikes.

A pause.

Three more.

Lily’s smile disappeared.

“That’s how she used to knock on the library door.”

Daniel stood immediately.

“Stay with your mother.”

He crossed the foyer and opened the security cabinet. The backup monitor flickered to life.

A child stood outside the gate.

She looked about ten years old.

Her red coat was soaked through. Dark hair clung to her face. She had no shoes, and mud covered her bare feet.

One hand held the iron gate.

The other clutched a torn piece of paper.

Daniel activated the exterior speaker.

“What’s your name?”

The girl looked directly toward the camera.

“They know she burned the notebook.”

Daniel froze.

Behind him, Lily entered the foyer.

Elena followed closely.

The girl lifted the paper toward the camera.

A number had been written across it in black ink.

Lily’s hand tightened around her rabbit.

Daniel unlocked the gate remotely, but nothing happened.

    The system remained dead.

He took a flashlight and moved toward the door.

“I’m coming with you,” Elena said.

    “No.”

“You are not going out there alone.”

    Daniel looked at Lily.

“Stay inside. Lock the door behind us.”

Lily nodded, though fear had already settled across her face.

Daniel and Elena crossed the lawn through the rain.

By the time they reached the gate, the girl was barely standing.

    Daniel unlocked it manually.

    The child fell forward.

    Elena caught her.

    “She’s freezing.”

Daniel removed his coat and wrapped it around the girl.

    “What happened to you?”

    The girl struggled to speak.

    “My name is Mara.”

    “Mara what?”

    “Mercer.”

She pressed the wet paper into Daniel’s hand.

“They said Lily opened the first door.”

Daniel looked at the number again.

    “What door?”

Mara’s eyes moved toward the dark road behind them.

“The one they were never supposed to find.”

    Headlights appeared in the distance.

A black vehicle moved slowly around the curve.

Daniel lifted Mara and carried her through the gate.

Elena slammed it shut behind them.

The vehicle stopped fifty yards away.

    Its headlights remained on.

Daniel could see no license plate.

    No driver.

    No movement inside.

    Then the lights switched off.

By the time Daniel’s security team arrived, the road was empty.

A doctor examined Mara in one of the foundation’s medical rooms.

She was dehydrated, exhausted, and covered with bruises in different stages of healing.

There were faint marks around both wrists.

Lily stood outside the room with Elena.

Daniel searched the child’s coat for identification.

    There was none.

But sewn inside the lining, he found a small electronic device.

    A tracker.

Its red light was still blinking.

Daniel placed it on the metal table.

The light changed from red to green.

A message appeared on the tiny screen.

    SUBJECT 200 CONFIRMED.

    Daniel stopped breathing.

    A second line appeared.

    BEGIN SUBJECT 201.

Behind him, Mara opened her eyes.

    “They found me,” she whispered.

The lights throughout the mansion went out.

And somewhere inside the sealed west wing, a bell rang three times.
