Chapter 14 - CLAIRE’S SIDE OF MARLENE
Claire’s archived emails showed my mother was not always her enemy.
That surprised me.
After Lily was born:
Marlene brought meals.
Stayed during postpartum complications.
Took night shifts.
Claire wrote:
I don’t know how we’d survive without your mom.
Real gratitude.
Then finances entered.
Claire inherited larger Mercer responsibility after her own mother died.
Mom began suggesting:
“Ethan should sit on the board.”
Claire said no.
Why?
Conflict.
My company, Whitaker Property Management, had contracts with Mercer campuses.
If I controlled trust votes and vendor business, conflicts multiplied.
I did not know those conversations happened.
Mom took Claire’s refusal personally.
Email:
Marlene:
You don’t trust my son.
Claire:
I trust him enough not to put him in a structure that makes our marriage a business negotiation.
Excellent sentence.
Mom:
Family should build together.
Claire:
Family should also be allowed to remain family.
There.
The philosophical split.
After Claire’s diagnosis, Mom became more aggressive.
She believed death made consolidation urgent.
Claire believed death made independence urgent.
Neither told me fully.
They were deciding how much I should bear while grieving in advance.
Again, protection through omission.
Claire was not perfect.
