Chapter 25 - CLAIRE’S LAST ADULT LETTER

At eighteen, Lily opened Claire’s final birthday letter.

I did not ask to read.

She invited me later.

Claire wrote:

If Dad has become too serious, please make fun of him.

Lily looked at me.

“Mom understood the assignment.”

Then:

Money is useful. Family is useful. Neither should make you smaller.

And:

If someone tells you that protecting the family requires you to lie about what you saw, that person is protecting themselves.

I had to stop reading.

Claire had not predicted Marlene pinning Lily.

She understood patterns.

Different.

Lily folded the letter.

“Do I have to forgive Grandma?”

“No.”

“Do you?”

“I don’t know.”

She smiled.

“You’re old. Decide.”

May you like

“Cruel.”

“Genetic.”
