Chapter 23 - MARLENE’S LETTERS

Prison letters came.

First:

You betrayed me.

Unread beyond that.

Second:

Claire turned you against me from the grave.

Stored.

Third, two years later:

I keep trying to write this without explaining myself.

Better.

She admitted:

“I saw Claire’s trust as something that should have strengthened our family. When she designed it to limit us, I took that personally.”

Then:

“When Lily saw the document, I did not see a frightened child. I saw a witness.”

That sentence hurt.

Then:

“No grandmother should look at her granddaughter that way.”

No request for access.

No “I may die.”

Good.

I replied once:

May you like

I read this.

Nothing more.
