Chapter 1 - THE PUSH THAT WAS MEANT TO KILL

The salt air of the Atlantic was freezing, biting through the thin fabric of Sophia Carter’s silk maternity gown. Moonlight cut jagged, silver lines across the dark water below the deck of the luxury yacht The Sovereign. Seven months pregnant, Sophia leaned heavily against the cold mahogany railing, her hand instinctively resting on her swollen stomach. She felt the soft, rhythmic kick of her unborn child inside her—a sudden flutter of life that brought a temporary smile to her exhausted lips. For months, she had felt an overwhelming sense of isolation, but tonight was supposed to be a celebration of their upcoming parenthood.

Behind her, footsteps approached. They were light, calculated, and entirely devoid of the warmth that usually accompanied a husband walking toward his wife.

"The view is beautiful tonight, isn't it, Sophia?" Ryan’s voice, once the anchor of her world, sounded hollow. It lacked the tender inflection he had used when they first married.

Sophia turned her head slightly, offering a soft smile. "It is. I was just thinking about the baby, Ryan. In just two months, our lives are going to change completely."

Ryan didn't smile back. The dim light of the yacht's deck illuminated the sharp, cold angles of his face. "You're right, Sophia. Your life is going to change. And mine is finally going to begin."

Before Sophia could process the chilling detachment in his words, a pair of powerful, unyielding hands slammed into her shoulder blades. The sheer kinetic force of the shove tore her grip completely away from the polished railing. Air rushed past her ears, whipping her dark hair across her face as her body fell through the empty space. Time seemed to slow to an agonizing crawl as she plummeted toward the black, churning abyss below.

From the deck above, a cruel, triumphant laugh cut through the crashing of the waves. Ryan stood at the railing, his arm coiled tightly around the waist of his mistress, Vanessa, who had slipped out from the shadows of the VIP cabin. Vanessa wore a vicious, satisfied sneer, her diamonds catching the moonlight.

"One push... and all the Carter wealth will finally be ours!" Ryan shouted into the howling wind, raising a crystal champagne glass toward the moon in a twisted victory toast. Vanessa leaned into his chest, her laughter echoing over the roar of the yacht's twin engines as the vessel continued its course, leaving Sophia behind without a second thought.

The freezing ocean water slammed into Sophia's body like solid concrete, knocking the remaining oxygen violently from her lungs. The sheer impact dragged her down into the deep, dark currents. The cold was absolute, a sudden paralyzing shock that threatened to shut her muscles down instantly. She began to sink, the white foam of the surface fading rapidly into pitch blackness.

But Sophia was a Carter. Beneath her gentle exterior lay the bloodline of a man who had built a global empire through sheer, unyielding ruthlessness. As the heavy water pulled her deeper, her vision beginning to blur from the lack of oxygen, her fingers drifted down to the large, diamond-encrusted pendant hanging around her neck. Her father had given it to her on his deathbed, telling her it was a family heirloom. It was much more than that.

With the last ounce of her fading consciousness, Sophia located the hidden mechanical node buried directly beneath the center diamond. She pressed it hard until it clicked.

Deep beneath the surface, a silent, encrypted satellite distress signal activated, broadcasting her exact military-grade GPS coordinates directly to a private server. Sophia looked up through the bubbling sea foam at the rapidly disappearing lights of The Sovereign. A cold, lethal smile spread across her lips just before the darkness claimed her mind completely.

“The hunt has only just begun, Ryan.”
