Chapter 8 - THE MONSTER BEHIND VANESSA

The interrogation room at the federal precinct was freezing, lit only by a harsh, buzzing fluorescent bulb that cast sharp shadows across the concrete walls. Vanessa sat at the heavy metal table, her manicured hands locked in thick steel cuffs. Her expensive makeup was smeared from hours of relentless, unyielding questioning by the district attorney.
Across from her, standing safely behind the dark pane of the one-way glass mirror, stood Sophia. Her arms were crossed over her white blazer, her gaze fixed on the woman who had celebrated her presumed death just weeks prior.
"We have the digital wire logs, Vanessa," the lead prosecutor said, tossing a thick folder onto the metal table with a resounding slap. "You authorized the courier transfer. You signed the offshore activation code. With your prior history of corporate fraud and the yacht security tampering, you are looking at consecutive life sentences without the absolute possibility of parole. Your lawyers can't save you from this."
Vanessa broke down completely, sobbing hysterically as she slammed her chained wrists against the table, the metallic clinking echoing sharply in the room.
"It wasn't my plan!" Vanessa shrieked, turning her wild, bloodshot eyes directly toward the glass mirror, as if her primal instinct told her Sophia was standing right behind it. "I didn't invent the laundering scheme! Ryan didn't have the brains to forge those complex probate wills on his own! We were just following orders! Someone else gave us the corporate bypass security codes to Arthur's private grid! We were promised a cut, nothing more!"
The prosecutor leaned forward, his shadow engulfing her. "Who gave you the codes, Vanessa? Who is the architect?"
"It was Charles!" Vanessa screamed, her voice reaching a panicked, desperate crescendo. "Charles Carter! Sophia's own uncle! He’s the one who wanted control of the international logistics empire from the very beginning! He hated Arthur! He funded Ryan’s shell firm five years ago just to place him as a corporate spy inside Arthur's inner circle! Ryan was just a pawn to do the dirty work... and so was I! Please, you have to protect me from him!"
Behind the glass, the temperature in the observation room seemed to drop to zero. Sophia’s breath caught violently in her throat, her fingers tightening against her arms.
Charles Carter.

Her father's younger brother. The quiet, soft-spoken, scholarly uncle who had sat at every single family dinner during her childhood. The man who had held her hand at her father's funeral, weeping bitter tears over the coffin, promising her that she would always have a family left. He hadn't been a passive, grieving relative; he had been the true monster hiding in plain sight, using Ryan as a blunt, expendable instrument to wash the family blood off his own hands.
Sophia closed her eyes for a brief second, taking a deep, calculated breath. The circle of vipers was larger than she had ever imagined, but the defensive net her father had left behind was finally closing around every single one of them.
