Chapter 6 - THE RETURN

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was packed to absolute capacity for the opening night of the International Investment Summit. The city's remaining financial elite sat in hushed, anxious murmurs, their eyes glued to the central stage where the newly formed, hyper-powerful Aegis Capital Fund was set to introduce its mysterious Chief Executive Officer—the shadow entity that had spent the last seventy-two hours aggressively buying up every single fractured, devalued share of the ruined Carter Corporation.
Ryan sat in the very back row of the gallery, his collar turned up and a low baseball cap pulled over his face to avoid the swarming paparazzi. He had managed to stay out of a jail cell only because his elite defense attorneys had filed a temporary, high-cost emergency injunction challenging the video’s digital authenticity, but he was completely broke, desperate, and hunting for a corporate lifeline.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the master of ceremonies announced, his voice booming over the state-of-the-art audio system. "Please welcome the majority shareholder of the Carter empire and the Chief Executive of Aegis Capital."
The heavy velvet curtains parted slowly.
A woman stepped into the brilliant, blinding spotlight. She wore a flawless, tailored emerald-green blazer, her dark hair cut into a sharp, asymmetrical bob that perfectly framed her high cheekbones and striking jawline. Her posture was commanding, elegant, and entirely unbroken.
Ryan surged to his feet in the back row, the breath catching violently in his throat as his heart hammered against his ribs like a sledgehammer. The face was refined, slightly altered by subtle cosmetic reconstruction around the jawline following her rescue from the ocean currents, but the eyes—those sharp, piercing, brilliant Carter eyes—were completely unmistakable.
Beside him, Vanessa let out a sharp, horrified gasp, her manicured fingers digging violently into Ryan’s forearm. "Ryan... look at her. It's... it can't be. She died in the ocean. I saw her sink beneath the foam!"

Sophia stepped up to the silver microphone, looking out over the crowded room of billionaires and journalists. Her eyes slowly swept across the gallery, pausing for a fraction of a second on the terrified, pale faces of her husband and his mistress huddled in the shadows of the back row. A cold, devastating smile touched her lips.
"Good evening, everyone," Sophia said, her voice clear, powerful, and carrying the exact corporate authority of her late father. "The Carter empire has been under a temporary shadow of greed and betrayal. But tonight, the true management has officially returned to the board. And the ledgers are about to be balanced."
