Chapter 7 - HUNTING THE HUNTERS

The fallout from the International Investment Summit was swift and merciless. Within forty-eight hours of her public re-emergence, Sophia Carter—now legally recognized as the absolute head of Aegis Capital—began executing a systematic, cold-blooded corporate execution. Backed by the multi-billion-dollar liquid reserve her father had hidden in Singapore, she didn't just reclaim her father's company; she choked out the very air Ryan and Vanessa breathed.
One by one, the city’s major shipping suppliers, logistics partners, and political allies received private calls from Aegis Capital. The terms were simple: terminate all associations with the Vance name immediately, or face permanent financial blacklisting. By the end of the week, every contract Ryan had signed during his three weeks of delusion was torn to pieces.
Sitting in a cramped, dimly lit apartment on the industrial edge of the city, Vanessa stared at a digital indictment document on her smartphone. The luxury penthouse was gone, her bank accounts were frozen by federal injunction, and the walls were closing in.
"She’s going to ruin us, Ryan," Vanessa hissed, her voice cracking with a desperate, animalistic terror as she looked at him. Ryan sat on the edge of a mattress, staring blankly at the floor. "She knows everything. The district attorney is signing the arrest warrants tomorrow morning. She’s not going to stop until we are rotting in a federal cage."
Ryan’s eyes snapped up, completely unraveled by the loss of his stolen empire. The last remnants of his sanity fractured, replaced by a dark, psychotic desperation. He pulled a burner phone from his jacket pocket and dialed an untraceable number to a dark-web fixer he had used during his early days in the corporate underground.
"I need a clean hit," Ryan growled into the receiver, his knuckles white. "Tomorrow morning. Outside the Aegis Capital tower. Make it look like a tragic hit-and-run. I don't care about the cost."
The next morning, the sun struggled to pierce through the thick Charleston fog. As Sophia stepped out of her luxury black sedan onto the bustling concrete plaza of the Aegis building, a tall man in a heavy courier jacket suddenly broke from the morning crowd. His face was obscured by a low cap, his right hand buried deep inside his pocket, grasping the metallic silhouette of a silenced compact firearm. He lunged directly toward her path.
Before he could even raise the barrel, four burly men in civilian tactical gear materialized from the shadows behind him. With lethal, military-grade precision, they slammed the assassin onto the concrete plaza, disarming him in less than three seconds. The crowd gasped, scattering in panic, but Sophia didn't even flinch.
She stopped her stride, looking down calmly at the pinned mercenary as Marcus, her head of private security, stepped forward and handed her a decrypted tablet.

"Our cyber team intercepted the communication lines two hours ago, Miss Carter," Marcus reported, his voice flat and professional. "The shooter carried a digital transfer footprint from an offshore account. The routing code traces back directly to the private device Vanessa used this morning. We have the entire murder-for-hire contract recorded on our servers."
Sophia looked up at the towering glass facade of her building, her expression entirely serene, devoid of fear. "Excellent. Deliver the encrypted audio logs and transfer receipts directly to the federal prosecutors. Let Vanessa know her final card has been played, and it didn't even scratch the board."
