Chapter 5 - GHOST

The air inside the Carter mansion turned toxic within forty-eight hours. The luxury sports cars parked in the cobblestone driveway were abruptly repossessed by the bank, the remaining household staff walked out en masse after their corporate credit cards were systematically declined, and Ryan paced the vast, empty marble living room like a rabid animal trapped in a gilded cage. His designer tie was torn open, his hair was disheveled, and sweat rolled down his temples.

"How could that old bastard hide two billion dollars?!" Ryan roared, grabbing a priceless Ming dynasty vase from the mantelpiece and hurling it into the limestone fireplace, shattering it into a thousand sharp pieces. "Vanessa, you told me your intelligence contacts verified the probate documents! You said the inheritance was hardcoded into the domestic logistics line!"

"They did verify it!" Vanessa screamed back, her aristocratic composure completely unraveled as she clutched a glass of cheap bourbon. Her face was pale with a terrifying realization. "The public ledgers showed the capital was anchored right here! Someone has completely hollowed out the entire banking grid from the inside out! We are sitting on a mountain of corporate debt!"

Before Ryan could launch into another violent tirade, the atmosphere in the room shifted. Every smart television, personal tablet, and smartphone inside the mansion suddenly let out a piercing, high-pitched emergency broadcast alert in perfect unison. The screens flickered violently, cutting through the local cable networks and digital streams to display a live, high-definition video feed.

The background of the video was instantly recognizable: it was the polished mahogany deck of The Sovereign, the exact luxury yacht where Ryan had committed his crime.

A dark shadow moved into the center of the frame, and then a voice—clear, resonant, and entirely haunting—echoed through the empty, cavernous halls of the mansion.

"If you are watching this video, it means my husband, Ryan Vance, has finally tried to kill me," Sophia’s recorded voice stated, her eyes staring directly into the lens with a terrifying, unyielding intensity. "He believed that by pushing his seven-month-pregnant wife into the freezing Atlantic, he could inherit the legacy my father spent a lifetime building. But he failed. Attached to this global broadcast is the unedited exterior security footage from the night of my disappearance. Watch closely."

The screen split. The video cut to a wide-angle security feed showing Ryan violently shoving his heavily pregnant wife over the mahogany railing into the black ocean waves, followed immediately by his clear, high-definition audio recording raising his champagne glass in a victory toast with Vanessa.

Ryan dropped heavily onto his knees on the cold marble floor, his eyes wide with a paralyzing, raw horror as the video went completely viral across the global web within seconds. The Carter Corporation stock plummeted by eighty percent in less than a single hour. And from the historic streets outside the estate gates, the distant, ominous wail of police sirens began to rise through the thick morning fog.
