Chapter 4 - THE PERFECT WIDOW

Exactly twenty-one days after the incident at sea, Ryan hosted a staggering, multi-million-dollar public memorial service at the city’s grand cathedral. The event was a masterclass in high-society theater. Ryan walked down the center aisle wearing a custom-tailored black wool suit, his head bowed, his hands trembling slightly as he held a single white rose. He gave a heartbreaking eulogy that left half the city's elite in tears, playing the role of the shattered, devoted young husband who had lost his family to the cruel whims of nature.

That very evening, the heavy black drapes of mourning were violently torn down inside the Carter estate.

Vanessa’s designer luggage was officially moved into the master bedroom. She stood in the grand marble living room, wearing a striking silk dress, pouring two crystal flutes of vintage champagne. She walked over to the velvet sofa, sliding onto Ryan's lap with a sharp, victorious purr.

"To the new king of Charleston," Vanessa whispered, clinking her glass against his. "No more sneaking around in cheap hotels. No more playing the supportive family friend. The house is ours, the global shipping lines are ours, and that boring, pregnant little heiress is currently rotting at the bottom of the shelf."

Ryan laughed out loud, a deep, arrogant sound that echoed off the high ceilings. He took a long, greedy gulp of the champagne. "I checked the probate timeline with the firm today. The judge signs the temporary administrative release tomorrow morning. By noon, I’ll have total liquidity over the primary trust funds. The very first thing we’re doing is buying that private island in the keys."

The next morning, Ryan sat behind the massive mahogany desk in Arthur Carter’s former executive office, his feet resting structural arrogance on the polished wood. He picked up the secure phone, dialing the private banking suite of the city’s largest financial institution.

"This is Ryan Vance, acting administrative executor for the Carter estate," he said smoothly, leaning back in the leather chair. "I am authorizing an immediate five-hundred-million-dollar liquidity transfer from the Carter main reserve account into my personal checking portfolio."

There was an agonizingly long, suffocating silence on the other end of the line. Ryan could hear the frantic clacking of a computer keyboard.

"I am deeply sorry, Mr. Vance," the senior private banker finally replied, his tone tight, nervous, and completely stripped of its usual subservience. "We cannot authorize that transfer. In fact, by order of the International Banking Compliance Board, all primary accounts associated with the domestic branches of the Carter Corporation have been permanently locked."

Ryan surged out of his chair, his face turning an angry, violent crimson as his fist slammed onto the desk. "What the hell do you mean locked?! I am the sole legal heir! My wife is dead!"

"You own the domestic holding company, sir," the banker explained coldly, refusing to break protocol. "But the public ledgers were manipulated. The holding company currently has zero liquid capital and is carrying an outstanding debt margin call of four hundred million dollars. The funds you are trying to access do not exist."
