Chapter 9 - CHECKMATE

The annual general shareholders meeting of the Carter Corporation was held in the primary executive boardroom on the top floor of the tower. Outside, the city of Charleston was blanketed by a heavy gray sky, rain tapping softly against the reinforced glass windows. Charles Carter sat at the head of the long glass table, his posture relaxed, a look of serene, aristocratic authority on his face. He adjusted his silk tie, reviewing the final consolidation documents that would merge the remaining logistics branches into his personal asset group.
"Since Ryan Vance has been formally detained by federal authorities," Charles said smoothly, looking around at the gathered board members, "and given the unfortunate, tragic legal complications surrounding my late niece, Sophia, I will now assume absolute voting control of the primary—"
The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open with a resounding thud.
Sophia walked into the room. She wore a striking, pure-white tailored suit, her stride steady, slow, and filled with an unshakeable power. Behind her came a team of six federal marshals and two compliance officers from the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Charles rose slowly from his chair, his face losing its color, though he forced a polite, patronizing smile. "Sophia... my dear niece. This is a private board vote. You shouldn't be here—"
"Sit down, Charles," Sophia commanded, her voice dropping like an iron anvil into the quiet room.
She stepped to the opposite head of the table, nodding to Marcus, who instantly overrode the main digital projection screen on the wall. The screen displayed a massive, undeniable mountain of federal evidence:
The Recordings: Encrypted audio logs of Charles coordinating with Ryan Vance to falsify the original 2021 probate documents.
The Insurance Fraud: Digital wire records showing Charles transferring five million dollars to the offshore chemical syndicate that orchestrated her father's fatal car crash.
The Yacht Security Override: The precise digital signature from Charles’s private IP address that disabled the emergency lifeboats on the yacht the night Ryan shoved her over the railing.
"The game is over, Uncle," Sophia said, looking directly into his horrified eyes. "You spent ten years trying to buy this company with blood. But every single share you think you hold was legally liquidated by Aegis Capital four hours ago."

The lead federal marshal stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "Charles Carter, you are under arrest for first-degree conspiracy to commit murder, corporate fraud, and international money laundering."
As the steel cuffs clicked shut around her uncle’s wrists, Sophia turned her back on him, looking out the massive glass window at the sprawling harbor below. The chess board was clean. The vipers were caged.
