Chapter 11

CHAPTER XI: IN THE BLIND
The EMP blast tore through the air with a violent, electric crackle.
In a fraction of a second, the helicopter’s engine coughed, spark-showered, and cut out entirely. Its powerful spotlight blew out in a violent spray of glass, plunging the shipping yard into absolute, pitch-black darkness. Around the docks, the crimson laser sights vanished as the mercenaries' tactical gear fried instantly.
A second later, the heavy chopper lost tail control, spinning wildly into the sea. It crashed into the roaring black waves fifty yards off the pier with a thunderous SPLASH, sending a wall of icy ocean water washing over the concrete.
"Move!" Jonathan roared.
He grabbed Emily by the wrist, pulling her low beneath the cover of a massive steel container just as the darkness erupted with the blind, chaotic chatter of automatic gunfire. Mercenaries, disoriented and stripped of their night vision, sprayed bullets blindly into the shadows. Sparks flew off the corrugated steel above their heads like miniature fireworks.
Jonathan drew his secondary sidearm—a mechanical 9mm untouched by the EMP—and fired three controlled shots into the darkness. Two men crumpled to the wet ground.
"The water gate!" Emily shouted over the gunfire, her fingers locked around his. "There’s an old smuggler’s canal beneath the warehouse. It leads straight out to the river!"
They sprinted through the rain, dodging flashes of muzzle fire. Jonathan fired backward, keeping the remaining mercs pinned behind a row of rusting crates.
They burst through the heavy wooden doors of the lower dockhouse. Emily didn't hesitate; she sprinted down a narrow flight of stone steps leading to a hidden slipway. Tied to the concrete pillar was an unmarked, matte-black speed boat—powered by a dual-fuel mechanical engine built specifically to survive an electrical pulse.
"Get in!" Jonathan urged, keeping his body positioned toward the stairs as heavy footsteps echoed above them.
Emily leapt into the boat, immediately pulling back the manual throttle latch. The engine sputtered, groaned, and then roared to life with a deep, guttural vibration.
Jonathan threw himself aboard just as two mercenaries burst onto the landing above. He fired twice, dropping them onto the wooden stairs, and slammed the throttle forward.
The boat surged into the pitch-black canal, tearing through the water and leaving the burning docklands behind.
Three Days Later — Somewhere over the North Atlantic
The low hum of a private jet’s engines vibrated softly through the cabin. Outside the oval windows, endless white clouds stretched across a sea of deep blue.
Inside, the atmosphere was thick with a quiet, fragile truce.
Emily sat wrapped in a heavy cashmere blanket on the leather sofa, a mug of warm tea between her hands. She looked healthier—the color had returned to her face, though a faint purple bruise still marked her wrist from the IV lines.
Jonathan stood near the front bar, pouring two fingers of bourbon. He set the glass down, walking over to sit across from her.
Between them on the table lay a new set of unmarked passports, a stack of clean encrypted satellite drives, and an ultrasound image pinned to a clean medical file.
For the first time in five years, there were no secrets left between them. No Vance dynasty. No Mercer empire. No Samuel. Just two survivors in an empty sky.
Jonathan reached across the small table, his large hand gently covering hers.
"Where are we going?" Emily asked softly, her eyes searching his.
Jonathan leaned forward, a faint, genuine smile—one she hadn't seen in years—softly touching his lips.
"Somewhere no one knows our names," Jonathan said quiet, steady tone. "Somewhere we can finally build what they tried to steal from us."
May you like
Emily looked down at the ultrasound picture, then back up at him, letting out a breath she felt like she’d been holding for half her life. She turned her hand over, squeezing his fingers tight.
Behind them, the city they left behind was burning in corporate scandals and criminal indictments. But ahead of them, past the endless clouds, lay a quiet coast, a fresh dawn, and a family born out of the ashes of a war.
