Chapter 8

CHAPTER VIII: THE DEVIL’S LEDGER
The faded manila folder lay between them on the mahogany floor like an unexploded bomb. Outside, a flash of lightning illuminated the penthouse, casting jagged shadows across Marcus Vance’s cold, triumphant face.
Jonathan didn't move. Every instinct told him it was a psychological ploy, a cheap desperate gamble from a dying titan. Yet the haunting memory of Emily’s secret burner phone—and the hesitation in her eyes over the years—anchored his boots to the floor.
“What is this, Marcus?” Jonathan’s voice was barely a rumble above the thunder.
“That,” Marcus said, lighting a cigar with steady hands, “is the reason your father died twenty years ago. And the reason my daughter was placed in your path.”
Jonathan lunged forward, grabbing Marcus by the lapels of his bespoke suit and slamming him back against the floor-to-ceiling glass. The glass cracked under the force, spider-webbing out toward the stormy sky forty stories below.
“Speak,” Jonathan snarled, his restraint completely snapping.
Marcus didn't flinch. He merely laughed, a dark, raspy sound. “You built an empire thinking you were the hunter, Jonathan. But Emily wasn't the victim you saved from me. She was the architect. Look at the date on those medical and adoption files, boy. She didn't marry you for love or money. She married you to claim the Mercer bloodline clearance for the Vault.”
Jonathan’s grip tightened, his knuckles white. “Lie.”
“Check the hospital right now,” Marcus whispered, his eyes glinting with malice. “Why do you think her heart rate spiked the moment you left? She’s not dying, Jonathan. She’s waking up. And the moment she does... Protocol Omega doesn't destroy the Vances. It transfers total executive control of your empire straight to her.”
Jonathan’s phone suddenly buzzed violently in his pocket. Once. Twice. A priority distress signal from Samuel.
He shoved Marcus back into his chair, ripped his eyes away, and snatched the phone to his ear.
“Jonathan!” Samuel’s voice came through, filled with unprecedented panic over the static of the storm. “We have a breach at St. Jude’s! But it’s—it’s not Vance forces!”
“Who is it?” Jonathan demanded, stepping back toward the doors, his heart hammering against his ribs.
“It’s Mrs. Mercer,” Samuel stammered, the background audio filled with screaming sirens and the sharp crack of suppressed gunfire. “She just bypassed the biometric locks on the entire fifth floor using your master keycodes... She took down three guards, Jonathan. She’s gone. And she took the encrypted hard drives from your estate safe with her.”
Jonathan froze in the middle of the ruined office. He slowly turned his head to look at Marcus, who was calmly puffing his cigar, watching him with a sickening smirk.

The folder on the floor lay open now, exposed by the wind howling through the cracked window.
On the top page was a photograph of a sixteen-year-old Emily—wearing the tactical uniform of a classified black-ops division, standing beside Jonathan’s late father.
