CHAPTER XX: THE DRAGON’S VAULT

Singapore — 48 Hours Later

Rain fell in a warm, torrential sheet over the neon-drenched skyline of Marina Bay. Fifty stories beneath the hyper-modern financial center lay Sector 9—a subterranean, military-grade server facility built inside an abandoned Cold War bunker. It was the nerve center of the Obsidian Triad, shielded by three-foot-thick reinforced steel, biometric scanners, and a rotating guard of former state mercenaries.

High above the wet asphalt, inside the dimly lit interior of a blacked-out transport van parked two blocks away, Samuel tapped away at a bank of portable monitors.

"The atmospheric scrubbers cycle every forty seconds," Samuel said into his comm-link, his voice a steady rasp over the encrypted frequency. "That’s your window to bypass the thermal grid on Level B3. Once you're inside the main vault, you have less than six minutes before the manual override locks you in permanently."

In the back of the van, Jonathan adjusted the silent-draw holster under his dark tactical jacket. Beside him, Emily checked the optical drive reader attached to her wrist-mounted pad. Her hair was pulled back tight, her eyes gleaming with the sharp, focused precision that had defined her entire life.

In a secure, undisclosed location three hours north, their son was safe under the protection of a vetted private security team—funded by the last untouched reserves of the Mercer legacy.

"If the video exists," Emily whispered, locking a fresh magazine into her sidearm, "it’s stored on an isolated air-gapped node. The Triad doesn't keep leverage on a network. They keep it on iron."

Jonathan looked at her, his expression a fortress of quiet resolve. "We don't just delete the video, Emily. We erase their leverage forever."

"And if your father..." She paused, her voice softening just a fraction. "...if what Samuel said about the logs is true?"

Jonathan’s jaw tightened. "Then we bring him home. Or we bury the ghost."

Ten minutes later, the secondary cooling duct on Level B3 hissed open.

Jonathan dropped lightly to the polished concrete floor, landing without a sound, his sidearm raised. Emily followed instantly, her boots making no noise as she swept her barrel across the dimly lit corridor. The air down here was frigid, smelling of ozone and recycled nitrogen.

"Guard patrol in ten seconds," Samuel’s voice crackled through their ear-pieces. "Take the maintenance hallway to your left."

They moved as one shadow through the labyrinth of server racks. Towering black pillars pulsed with eerie blue LED lights, humming with the weight of terabytes of stolen identities, blood money, and global secrets.

They reached the central vault door—a massive circular slab of titanium equipped with dual biometric palm-scanners.

Emily stepped up to the terminal. She pulled a small latex membrane from her pouch—a high-resolution 3D print of Marcus Vance's palm print, extracted from the physical files in his Italian safe house—and pressed it against the scanner while plugging her wrist pad directly into the maintenance port.

The terminal beeped once. Twice. A green light flashed.

ACCESS GRANTED: EXECUTIVE CLEARANCE LEVEL 3.

The heavy titanium door groaned, pneumatic seals releasing with a sharp hiss of compressed air as it swung open into a white, pristine room.

At the center of the room, suspended inside a glass cylinder, sat a single, solid-gold server module.

Jonathan stepped inside, his weapon ready, sweeping the elevated catwalks above. Empty. The room was dead silent save for the whir of the liquid nitrogen cooling unit.

"There it is," Emily said, stepping up to the console beneath the glass cylinder. She initiated the local interface. Lines of green code cascaded down her screen. "Accessing the air-gapped archives... Archive File 1999: The Mercer Liquidation."

Her breath hitched.

On the high-definition monitor in front of them, a video file began to play.

The timestamp read: OCTOBER 14, 2006.

The footage showed a rain-slicked alleyway behind the old Mercer Shipping Yard. A younger Jonathan’s father—Arthur Mercer—was on his knees, hands bound behind his back. Standing in front of him was Marcus Vance.

"Look at the shadow behind Marcus," Emily whispered, her fingers trembling slightly over the keys.

As Marcus raised a pistol to Arthur's head, another man stepped out of the darkness behind Marcus. He caught Marcus’s arm, stopping him. The second man turned his face toward the camera for a fraction of a second.

Jonathan leaned closer, his blood running cold.

The man who had given the order—the man holding the suppressed weapon that ultimately executed Arthur Mercer—wasn't Marcus Vance.

It was Samuel.

Before Jonathan could process the soul-crushing revelation, a sharp CLACK echoed through the vault.

The heavy titanium door behind them slammed shut, the pneumatic locks sealing with a deafening thud.

The overhead lights shifted from white to a deep, blood-red emergency strobe.

The intercom on the wall crackled to life, and Samuel’s voice came through—no longer the raspy, loyal butler, but cold, calculated, and smooth as ice.

"I am sorry you had to see that, Jonathan," Samuel said softly over the speaker. "Your father was a visionary. But like you... he grew weak. He wanted to dismantle the network from the inside. I couldn't allow him to destroy everything we built."

Jonathan stepped toward the reinforced glass window of the vault, his knuckles turning white as he gripped his sidearm. "You killed him. You raised me... and you killed my father."

"I didn't just raise you, Jonathan," Samuel’s voice replied smoothly. "I shaped you. I turned you into the ultimate weapon to eliminate Marcus when he became too greedy. And now... you’ve cleared the entire board for me. The Obsidian Triad doesn't belong to the Chairs anymore. It belongs to me."

Outside the vault, through the reinforced glass, a dozen heavy combat droids and automated turret systems powered up, their red optical lenses locking onto Jonathan and Emily inside the containment room.

"Goodbye, Mr. and Mrs. Mercer," Samuel said softly. "Your son will be raised with the finest education money can buy."

The intercom went dead.
